At Texas\u2019 first Michelin ceremony, which named the best restaurants in the state<\/a> in 2024, a glitzy Houston ballroom was full of some of Dallas\u2019 top chefs<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Noticeably missing was chef Dean Fearing, one of Dallas-Fort Worth\u2019s most tenured chefs<\/a> and a charismatic mentor to many in the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe kept waiting for the invitation<\/a>. And the invitation never came to me,\u201d said the chef-owner of Fearing\u2019s at the Ritz-Carlton in Dallas.<\/p>\n

So instead of going to Texas\u2019 inaugural Michelin ceremony, he flew to Hawaii.<\/p>\n

Chef Roy Yamaguchi was hosting a food festival, and he\u2019d invited Fearing to come. There was a second reason Fearing wanted to get out of town, too: He wanted a distraction. For more than 40 years, Fearing had built menus of Southwest cuisine, proving himself an influential chef<\/a> at Dallas\u2019 Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, at Fearing\u2019s and beyond. Michelin recently named Fearing as one of five notable chefs in Dallas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fearing wanted to be at the Michelin ceremony. Heck, every high-achieving Texas chef did<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fearing was sitting on a white-sand beach in Honolulu when his phone started ringing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just got announced,\u201d his wife told him. <\/p>\n

Indeed, Michelin named Fearing\u2019s as one of 20 Recommended restaurants in Dallas-Fort Worth<\/a>. It\u2019s not a Michelin star, but it\u2019s a great accolade from the secretive Michelin critics.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?” Fearing asked his wife. \u201cWe didn\u2019t get an invitation.\u201d<\/p>\n

His world stood still for a moment. His phone rang again. Fearing\u2019s publicists urged him to look back through his emails as the Michelin ceremony continued on.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd sure enough … there it was,\u201d the chef said. <\/p>\n

He did get an invitation to the Michelin ceremony. It went to his junk folder. But alas, he was 4,000 miles away.<\/p>\n

The honor still stands, even though Fearing couldn\u2019t accept his award in person. The 28 North Texas restaurants named at the 2024 Michelin Guide Texas ceremony get to keep their accolades for one year<\/a>. Then, they\u2019re erased on Oct. 28, 2025, when a new Michelin ceremony announces the next crop of winners<\/a>. The Dallas Morning News will report those results in real time.<\/p>\n

Fearing\u2019s caper is a reminder to any chef hoping to receive an invitation: Check your spam folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh boy was I embarrassed,\u201d Fearing said. But it made for a great story.<\/p>\n

Plus, he said, \u201cit wasn\u2019t bad being on a beach.\u201d<\/p>\n
