At 34, Dallas-raised vocalist Jazzmeia Horn<\/a> is already a highly esteemed veteran. The three-time Grammy nominee is headed to New York City\u2019s famed Jazz at Lincoln Center for a series of May concerts, following gigs in Switzerland and beyond. (She\u2019ll perform Feb. 7 in Lewisville.)<\/p>\n

Yet for all her acclaim, Horn refuses to coast on past glories. Last year, the scat-singing phenom told All About Jazz that she still studies with three separate teachers to sharpen her diction, improvisation and piano playing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not going to be perfect. You must always practice,\u201d she said. \u201cThe two things that I want to impart upon all the vocalists all over the world: Practice, and be yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Horn \u2014 a 2009 grad of Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts<\/a> \u2014 released her fourth and most recent album, Messages<\/a>, in 2024. One of the tunes, \u201cHappy Livin,\u2019\u201d was inspired by her late grandfather, the Rev. B.L. Horn, pastor at Dallas\u2019 Golden Chain Missionary Baptist Church, where Jazzmeia first learned to sing.<\/p>\n

For her next project \u2014 a children\u2019s album \u2014 her two school-age daughters provided the inspiration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need something more than just the silly sounds they get from the cartoons and things like \u2018Baby Shark,\u2019\u201d Horn said. \u201cThat\u2019s sweet and cute. But they need something more meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n
