Just in time for the ice to finally melt<\/a>, Dallas drivers will have another obstacle to navigate on the roads this weekend. Remember that major Interstate 30 closure through downtown<\/a> a couple of weekends ago? It returns this weekend.<\/p>\n

I-30 will be shut down from Interstate 45\/U.S. 75 to Interstate 30, in both directions, starting Friday, Jan. 30 at 10 p.m. and running through 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2.<\/p>\n

All main lanes of the highway will be closed for bridge demolition work as part of the ongoing I-30 Canyon Project. We knew this was happening again soon, and there was a likelihood it was going to be back-to-back weekends — but last weekend’s snow and ice put the latest round of closures on hold.<\/p>\n

These early closures are just the initial steps on the project, which is expected to last until late 2030<\/a> at a cost of $888 million. The project is designed to modernize the aging downtown corridor, improve safety, and reconfigure the freeway to better handle future traffic demand.<\/p>\n

Construction crews hustled to get the bridge demo work done<\/a> and cleared from the roadway two weekends ago during the first closure, and there were no issues getting the highway reopened by the 5 a.m. Monday deadline.<\/p>\n

The Texas Department of Transportation hasn’t released a full schedule of closures, but more are expected to happen over the course of the project. The one wrinkle, as we’ve seen this month<\/a>, will be weather and how often planned closures will need to be rescheduled.<\/p>\n

In addition to the weekend I-30 shutdowns, several downtown streets will see long-term closures and lane reductions as part of the larger Canyon Project footprint.<\/p>\n

Cesar Chavez Boulevard closed at I-30 beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, January 12, and remain closed through late 2028.<\/p>\n

Cadiz Street will be closed at I-30 starting 9 p.m. Tuesday, January 13. The street will eventually reopen on a new alignment later in the project.<\/p>\n

Akard Street closed at I-30 beginning at 9 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, with the closure expected to last through summer 2028.<\/p>\n
