It\u2019s only been a few days since city officials hosted a press conference announcing a zero-tolerance approach to combat drunk driving,<\/a> and El Pasoans have some thoughts about this approach.<\/p>\n

Tuesday morning El Paso leaders shared that they are taking a hard stance on drunk driving, rolling out a zero-tolerance enforcement policy as arrests continue to rise. Mayor Renard U. Johnson, Police Chief Peter Pacillas, and District Attorney James Montoya emphasized that while enforcement is important, preventing crashes and saving lives is the ultimate goal.<\/p>\n

In the first two weeks of 2026 alone, police issued 1,400 citations and nearly 800 hazardous citations. Montoya highlighted ongoing efforts like blood draws for drivers who refuse sobriety tests and pushing for ignition interlocks, higher fines, expanded legislation, and DWI checkpoints.<\/p>\n

El Pasoans Have Suggestions For El Paso Officials:\u00a0<\/p>\n

The city has also taken proactive steps to prevent impaired driving. Last year, Montoya\u2019s office launched the \u201cPick Your Ride\u201d campaign, funded by a TXDOT grant, which provided thousands of free rides home during weekends and holidays which far surpassed its original goal of 2,445 rides.<\/p>\n

After sharing this news on Facebook, El Pasoans chimed in with their own ideas on how the city can further combat drunk driving. <\/p>\n

Stronger Consequences for Offenders
Many residents called for harsher penalties, including mandatory jail time starting with the first offense, longer sentences for repeat offenders, suspended licenses, and no immediate bail. Some suggested impounding vehicles, charging daily storage fees, or even auctioning cars to deter repeat behavior.<\/p>\n

Accountability for Bars and Alcohol Providers
A recurring idea was holding bars, bartenders, and stores more responsible for over-serving. Suggestions included drink limits, earlier last calls, increased enforcement around bar districts, and checkpoints near nightlife hotspots.<\/p>\n

Rehabilitation and Culture Change
Others pointed out that El Paso\u2019s strong drinking culture makes the issue complex. Instead of punishment alone, some advocated for more rehabilitation resources, substance abuse education, and community-based programs that address why people drink and drive in the first place.<\/p>\n

Technology and Prevention Tools
From ignition breathalyzers to extended vehicle holds, residents also suggested using technology to stop impaired driving before it happens.<\/p>\n
