In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The Storehouse Community Center in Plano is highlighting how collaboration and compassion can save lives. Through its partnership with Golden Cross Academic Clinic and Methodist Health System\u2019s Mobile Mammography Unit, The Storehouse provides free on-site mammograms three times a year, making critical breast cancer screenings accessible to women who might otherwise go without.<\/p>\n
Since the mammography unit\u2019s first visit in June 2022, more than 200 women have received screenings at The Storehouse. If abnormalities are detected, patients are referred for follow-up care through Methodist\u2019s patient navigation program, which connects them with affordable treatment options.<\/p>\n
A Neighbor\u2019s Story: Finding Hope Through The Storehouse<\/p>\n
For Plano resident Nancy Ferguson, discovering the mobile mammogram program was nothing short of life-changing. A mother of five and a high-risk patient with a strong family history of cancer, Ferguson had gone without screenings after her divorce and the loss of her insurance.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen on the day I drove by and saw the big mammography bus parked in front of The Storehouse, I could not believe it,\u201d said Ferguson. \u201cIt was like God had put it there for me! I went inside to see if they had time to see me and was able to make an appointment. I felt so blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Originally from Honduras, Ferguson has lived in the U.S. for nearly three decades and works as a nanny near The Storehouse. She first became familiar with the nonprofit after visiting its food pantry.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Ferguson\u2019s family has faced multiple battles with cancer \u2014 her mother had breast cancer twice, her father passed away from prostate cancer and several other relatives have been diagnosed with various forms of the disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cMy advice to other women is simple \u2014 don\u2019t wait!\u201d Ferguson said. \u201cCancer is real, and it\u2019s very bad. Be healthy for yourself and your family. The Storehouse provides this at no cost, and that can save your life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Health Access That Changes Outcomes<\/p>\n
The Methodist Dallas Medical Center Golden Cross Academic Clinic, which serves South Dallas and surrounding areas, works with The Storehouse to expand access to care across North Texas.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince partnering with The Storehouse, we\u2019ve seen firsthand how access changes outcomes,\u201d said Dr. Elizabeth Brewer, medical director of internal medicine, Golden Cross Academic Clinic. \u201cWorking together, we are providing both women and men access to ongoing medical care, education and preventive services. Programs like the mobile mammography unit help us meet neighbors where they are, empowering them to take charge of their health.\u201d<\/p>\n
