1.\u00a0Officers confront protesters at Texas facility as lawmaker visits father, son detained in Minnesota<\/a><\/p>\n

Texas state police deployed chemical irritants toward protesters Wednesday outside a federal detention facility where a Democratic congressman met with\u00a0a 5-year-old Ecuadorian boy and his father\u00a0whose case has stirred anger over the Trump administration\u2019s\u00a0immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a03 young brothers in Texas die after falling through icy pond during winter storm<\/a><\/p>\n

Three brothers \u2014 ages 6, 8 and 9 \u2014 died in Texas during the\u00a0massive winter storm\u00a0gripping the U.S. after falling through an icy pond across the street from a house where they were staying, authorities said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a02 Texas district attorneys join national coalition of prosecutors against federal overreach<\/a><\/p>\n

Two Texas district attorneys have joined a newly-created national group of prosecutors that say they\u2019re fighting against federal overreach through accountability and education.<\/p>\n

In a Wednesday\u00a0press release, Travis County DA Jos\u00e9 Garza and Dallas County DA John Creuzot were named some of the founding participants of the Project for the Fight Against Federal Overreach, or Project FAFO.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Deaths of migrants in ICE custody raises concerns<\/a><\/p>\n

In just the first month of the new year, three people have died in Texas while in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).<\/p>\n

According to ICE,\u00a0Luis Gustavo N\u00fa\u00f1ez C\u00e1ceres\u00a0died Jan. 5 while in ICE custody\u00a0in a Houston-area hospital\u00a0after being admitted for chronic heart-related health issues. The other deaths happened at the East Montana Detention Facility in El Paso. Citing human rights violations, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has repeatedly called for the facility to be shut down.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0South Texas aquarium leads sea turtle rescue effort amid winter weather<\/a><\/p>\n

The winter storm affected all creatures big and small, including the marine life in South Texas, specifically the sea turtles. Nearly 400 sea turtles were rescued from the cold temperatures along the Texas coast in Corpus Christi.<\/p>\n

The turtles were being kept safe and warm at the Texas State Aquarium Wildlife Rescue Center until they can be released back into the wild. The aquarium itself has been dubbed the third-best aquarium in the country.<\/p>\n

The Justice Department has opened a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting of Alex Pretti, the Minneapolis resident killed Saturday by Border Patrol officers, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said Friday.<\/p>\n
