Another strong cold front pushed through Texas early Friday, but unlike last weekend, lacks moisture and will not produce any wintry precipitation. Wind chill readings in the teens and even single digits Saturday morning. A cold weather advisory is in effect through Saturday morning for all areas from San Antonio northward to DFW. Look for Saturday morning lows in the teens across north Texas, 20s in Central regions and 30s and 40s for South Texas.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Deaths of migrants in ICE custody raises concerns<\/a><\/p>\n

In just the first month of the new year, three people have died in Texas while in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).<\/p>\n

According to ICE,\u00a0Luis Gustavo N\u00fa\u00f1ez C\u00e1ceres\u00a0died Jan. 5 while in ICE custody\u00a0in a Houston-area hospital\u00a0after being admitted for chronic heart-related health issues. The other deaths happened at the East Montana Detention Facility in El Paso. Citing human rights violations, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has repeatedly called for the facility to be shut down.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Texas businesses take part in ‘national shutdown’ protesting ICE<\/a><\/p>\n

Some businesses across the country and in the Lone Star State are taking part in a \u201cnational shutdown\u201d in response to the shooting deaths of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis by federal officers and the broader immigration enforcement operations across the U.S.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Even more protests are scheduled for Saturday across the country. The national organization 50501\u2014which stands for 50 protests in 50 states on one day\u2014has organized a day of action, which includes a\u00a0rally in Austin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Screwworm fly threat reaches disaster level, Gov. Greg Abbott says<\/a><\/p>\n

The movement of a parasitic fly into Texas could threaten livestock and cause property damage around the state.<\/p>\n

Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster order on Thursday addressing the northward spread of the New World Screwworm (NWS) from Central and South America to the U.S. southern border.<\/p>\n

The winter storm affected all creatures big and small, including the marine life in South Texas \u2014 specifically the sea turtles.
