Richardson, who went by the nickname \u201cBig Bopper,\u201d and pilot Robert Peterson were killed in a plane crash. The three musicians were traveling to Moorhead, Minnesota, from Iowa during a snowstorm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The incident became known as \u201cThe Day the Music Died\u201d 12 years later in Don McLean\u2019s hit song \u201cAmerican Pie.\u201d Buddy Holly was only 22 years old when he died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The memory of Buddy Holly remains alive in Lubbock, with the singer-songwriter\u2019s legacy and name cemented through buildings, statues and programs dedicated to fostering the local music and arts industry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" alt=\"Buddy Holly and The Crickets in 1957 (top to bottom: Allison, Holly and Mauldin) (Source:...\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/HVW5I5D6PBDVZIJX3MOR33NFCQ.jpg\" width=\"980\" height=\"1122\" \/>Buddy Holly and The Crickets in 1957 (top to bottom: Allison, Holly and Mauldin) (Source: Wikipedia)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Buddy Holly Center will honor the anniversary of their death Tuesday with free admission for everyone from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Visitors can also tour the J.I.
