LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – It\u2019s Groundhog Day, and while Punxsutawney Phil gets all the national attention, Lubbock\u2019s Prairie Dog Pete is dealing with what actually matters here: wind and a forecast that doesn\u2019t commit to a season. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s the first week of February but it won\u2019t feel like winter. <\/p>\n

The day will start off mild and cool, with temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s across much of the area. Winds are relatively light, and aside from some high clouds conditions are expected to be fairly quiet. <\/p>\n

As the day goes on, winds turn southwesterly and increase, becoming breezy by afternoon. <\/p>\n

Temperatures respond quickly, warming into the mid to upper 60s with some locations east of Lubbock inching closer to the 70s. <\/p>\n

The southwest winds bring air downhill off higher terrain. As that happens, the air sinks, compresses, warms, and dries out. Which is why February days like this can feel like an early spring, even when winter technically isn\u2019t over. <\/p>\n

Late tonight, a \u201ccold\u201d front moves through. On the ground, the most noticeable change will be wind direction and strength. Winds flip quickly to the north and increase, with gusts approaching 40 mph in some areas. <\/p>\n

What doesn\u2019t change much is temperature since the front doesn\u2019t carry truly cold air. <\/p>\n

Tuesday begins breezy with north winds and slightly cooler air. Highs settle into the lower 60s, closer to seasonal norms. <\/p>\n

Another cold front arrives early Wednesday, bringing another round of wind and some additional cloud cover. <\/p>\n

Even with that second front, rain never enters the picture. Moisture is expected to stay to our south and east. <\/p>\n

The larger pattern explains why this week will be quiet. The jet stream remains displaced to the north, keeping stronger storm systems and deep moisture away from West Texas. <\/p>\n

Without lift or moisture, the atmosphere simply doesn\u2019t have enough ingredients needed to do much. <\/p>\n
