Jackets snap tight, dust lifts off open fields, and the day begins with a sharp winter edge that won’t last long.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, sunshine dominates today, but north winds remain a factor, gusting near 30 mph at times. Afternoon highs push into the low 60s, though it feels cooler in exposed areas. Drivers on Loop 289 and US-84 should expect crosswinds, especially for high-profile vehicles.

Clear skies tonight allow temperatures to drop quickly. Lows settle into the lower 30s, setting up a midweek pattern of cold mornings and milder afternoons. Wednesday stays sunny but cooler, with highs in the mid 50s and a cold start near the upper 20s. Any melted moisture could briefly refreeze early, creating slick patches on bridges and shaded roads.

By Thursday, winter starts to loosen its grip. Afternoon highs rebound into the mid 60s with lighter winds and bright sun. Conditions improve steadily for travel, outdoor work, and school schedules.

Friday delivers the most noticeable shift. Temperatures climb into the low 70s, winds relax, and the air feels more like early spring than February. The warming trend continues into the weekend. Saturday reaches the mid 70s, and Sunday turns even warmer, nearing the upper 60s to low 70s with increasing clouds late.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook favors above-normal temperatures across West Texas late next week. While winter isn’t finished, momentum clearly shifts toward milder weather.

Plan for cold mornings, windy afternoons today, and a fast warm-up ahead.
