Lubbock <\/a>just survived one heck of a winter blast, and honestly, I\u2019m still driving past parking lots stacked with grungy snow piles tall enough to qualify as new West Texas landmarks. It\u2019s a reminder that the storm wasn\u2019t just a flurry \u2014 it was a full-on \u201cevery man for himself\u201d shopping spree that wiped out store shelves and made all of us behave like we\u2019ve never seen frozen water before. Classic Lubbock.<\/p>\n

Is Lubbock in for Round Two of Winter? Don\u2019t Put Away the Gloves Yet<\/p>\n

So the obvious question is: are we done, or is winter gearing up for an encore?
For that, tradition says we turn to Punxsutawney Phil \u2014 the furry meteorologist with a fan club. According to the handlers in charge of Phil\u2019s big moment, we\u2019re looking at six more weeks of winter. I\u2019d defer to local up-and-coming rodent forecaster \u201cPrairie Dog Pete,\u201d but he\u2019s still a rookie and probably hasn\u2019t even hired a publicist yet.<\/p>\n

But here\u2019s the thing about Phil: he\u2019s only accurate about 35% of the time. You could flip a tortilla off the Jones Stadium press box and do better. And even if he is right, what does \u201csix more weeks of winter\u201d really mean for us? Most of our winter has been mild \u2014 annoyingly cold one day, patio-ready the next. Are we getting more mild or more wild?<\/p>\n

For a somewhat respected long-range source, we turn to the Old Farmer’s Almanac<\/a>. Their outlook shows mild temperatures ahead with increasing chances of rain toward the end of the month. March follows with a few showers and more temperatures hovering around 60. Not exactly \u201csnowpocalypse,\u201d but not exactly \u201cspringtime bliss,\u201d either.<\/p>\n

In short, winter probably isn\u2019t done with us \u2014 but it\u2019s looking more like a polite goodbye hug than a surprise roundhouse kick. Still, keep the gloves handy. This is Lubbock. Anything can happen.<\/p>\n
