{"id":149566,"date":"2026-02-03T21:05:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T21:05:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/149566\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T21:05:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T21:05:12","slug":"city-of-sinton-says-evangeline-protests-aim-to-protect-residents-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/149566\/","title":{"rendered":"City of Sinton says Evangeline protests aim to protect residents\u2019 water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SINTON, Texas \u2014 The City of Sinton has <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/protests-filed-against-evangeline-groundwater-permits-jeopardizing-project-timeline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">formally filed protests against groundwater permits tied to the proposed Evangeline water project<\/a>, a move city leaders say is aimed at protecting local water supplies, not blocking water access for the region.<\/p>\n<p>Sinton City Manager John Hobson confirmed the protests were filed through the city\u2019s attorney earlier this week and target 22 drilling permits and one transport permit associated with the project.<\/p>\n<p>City of Sinton says Evangeline protests aim to protect residents\u2019 water, not block region<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe simple answer is we\u2019re doing the same thing the City of Corpus Christi is doing,\u201d Hobson told KRIS 6 News. \u201cWe\u2019re protecting the rights of our residents to have water, just as Corpus is doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/san-patricio-county\/evangeline-project-receives-promising-update-but-still-faces-obstacles-ahead\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Evangeline project<\/a> is part of Corpus Christi\u2019s long-term water strategy and would pump groundwater from the Evangeline Aquifer in San Patricio County for municipal use. <\/p>\n<p>The project would initially produce up to <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/corpus-christis-evangeline-water-deal-could-cost-840-million-require-treatment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">12 million gallons per day, with the option to double that amount if additional wells and infrastructure are approved.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hobson said Sinton\u2019s concerns center on what he described as heavy, largely unregulated groundwater extraction and the potential long-term impacts on the aquifer. &#8220;We\u2019re not protesting to deny access to water to the region,\u201d Hobson said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to balance out the extraction of groundwater in our area, which right now is tilted toward heavy extraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1768599969_293_.png\" alt=\"EVANGELINE SESSION.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Adam Beam<\/p>\n<p>        San Patricio County residents observe a map of the Evangeline Aquifer project at an information session hosted by Corpus Christi Water.<\/p>\n<p>Corpus Christi officials have previously said they are working with surrounding communities and have hosted multiple public meetings in San Patricio County to discuss Evangeline. Hobson acknowledged that Corpus has offered Sinton an interlocal agreement, but said it does not yet address all of the city\u2019s concerns.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/corpus-christi-races-to-secure-new-water-supply-as-gov-abbott-blasts-city-for-canceling-desal-project\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Corpus Christi leaders have emphasized that Evangeline is a key component of securing additional water supply before potential curtailment<\/a> later this year. Hobson said Sinton is not part of that curtailment issue and remains focused on safeguarding its own water resources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an issue that has been going on for years,\u201d Hobson said. \u201cOur focus is the unregulated extraction of groundwater, not Corpus Christi\u2019s curtailment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770152712_976_.png\" alt=\"EVANGELINE pic 102025.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"720\"\/><\/p>\n<p>File<\/p>\n<p>Despite the protests, Hobson said <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/san-patricio-county\/sinton\/its-not-the-solution-city-of-sinton-weighs-in-on-evangeline-groundwater-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sinton remains open to continued discussions with Corpus Christi.<\/a> \u201cWe\u2019re still working with Corpus on trying to come up with an interlocal agreement,\u201d he said. \u201cBut our first concern is water for our residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing everything we can to protect your water.
