{"id":149667,"date":"2026-02-03T22:26:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T22:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/149667\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T22:26:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T22:26:11","slug":"heres-whos-spending-in-san-antonios-texas-house-races","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/149667\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s who&#8217;s spending in San Antonio\u2019s Texas House races"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Challengers scored some unusually high-profile endorsements headed into the March 3 primary election, but the five San Antonio state lawmakers facing contested primary races are blowing them out of the water in terms of fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>Campaign finance reports covering Jan. 1 through Jan. 22 were due Monday.<\/p>\n<p>They indicated that the biggest spender on the Texas House landscape, pro-business group Texans for Lawsuit Reform, seems to be pumping the brakes on <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/marc-lahood-waged-an-unexpected-fight-with-gop-power-brokers\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/marc-lahood-waged-an-unexpected-fight-with-gop-power-brokers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">its expensive fight<\/a> with state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/marc-lahood-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-121\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/marc-lahood-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-121\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Marc LaHood<\/a> (R-San Antonio).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile trial lawyers are still pouring in money to help incumbents from both parties, Gov. Greg Abbott is picking sides the race to replace state Rep. John Lujan (R-San Antonio), Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock) is helping LaHood raise money, and a pro-charter school PAC is helping Democratic state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/philip-cortez-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Philip Cortez<\/a> (D-San Antonio) in his contested primary.<\/p>\n<p>Read about <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/meet-the-candidates-running-for-the-texas-legislature-in-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">all the candidates for the Texas Legislature <\/a>running in the March 3 primaries.<\/p>\n<p>The only insurgent candidate who rivaled an incumbent\u2019s haul in the last reporting period was Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/wille-ng-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Willie Ng<\/a>, a security company owner who served on the board of Texas\u2019 largest chamber of commerce and is now running against state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/mark-dorazio-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mark Dorazio<\/a> (R-San Antonio), a member of the GOP\u2019s conservative wing, in <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/122\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas House District 122<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101035264.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ng raised $130,000<\/a> in the first three months of January, compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101036063.PDF\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101036063.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Dorazio\u2019s $150,000<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Much of Ng\u2019s haul came from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparencyusa.org\/tx\/committee\/associated-republicans-of-texas-campaign-fund-15555-gpac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Associated Republicans of Texas PAC<\/a>, which has long been a defender of the state\u2019s more moderate, business-centric Republicans. Dorazio, a former Bexar GOP chair known for his socially conservative views, won a four-way primary to replace former moderate Republican Lyle Larson in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Ng is getting help from the Las Vegas Sands Corporation\u2019s deep-pocketed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparencyusa.org\/tx\/committee\/texas-defense-pac-00088727-gpac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas Defense PAC<\/a>, which wants to legalize casino gambling in Texas, as well as mail ads and other campaign grassroots services from Texans for Lawsuit Reform.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/90FE3A43-8A0D-4530-AEF7-5B2A15EE1218.jpeg\" alt=\"Mark Dorazio greets supporters during his election night party at Russo\u2019s Coal Fired Italian Kitchen in November 2022.\" class=\"wp-image-5278558\"  \/>Mark Dorazio greets  supporters during his election night party in November 2022.  Credit: Scott Ball \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>Dorazio has long <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-house-distrist-122-republicans-gambling\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-house-distrist-122-republicans-gambling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">been skeptical of casino gambling<\/a>. He\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2026\/01\/23\/texas-legislature-2026-republican-primaries-house-tort-reform\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">also among a number of conservatives<\/a> who went up against the business community\u2019s legal reform bills in the last legislative session, saying they went too far in shielding big business from being held accountable for wrongdoing. <\/p>\n<p>Like other conservatives in that group, Dorazio\u2019s campaign received money for the Texas Trial Lawyers Association PAC in January, plus $100,000 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparencyusa.org\/tx\/committee\/texans-for-truth-and-liberty-pac-00089694-gpac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texans for Truth and Liberty PAC<\/a>, which gets most of its funding from a single Houston law firm. <\/p>\n<p>Texas House District 121: LaHood is also in the midst of a tort reform-focused primary, thanks to a high-profile rift with <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/marc-lahood-waged-an-unexpected-fight-with-gop-power-brokers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texans for Lawsuit Reform group<\/a>, which publicly threatened to spend big against him after he killed their priority bills last session.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spending in LaHood\u2019s reelection race has <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/marc-lahood-primary-david-mcarthur-hd121-gop-primary-spending\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/marc-lahood-primary-david-mcarthur-hd121-gop-primary-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">already topped $1 million<\/a>, but TLR, which is under new leadership, appears to be pulling back on some of its spending for challengers this cycle, and did not show up on challenger <a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101035070.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">David McArthur\u2019s most recent report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, trial lawyers who benefitted from LaHood\u2019s move have helped him outraise McArthur in every reporting period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bria-woods-politics-Marc-LaHood-Gov-Greg-Abbott-Texas-House-District-121-09FEB24-13.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5360029\"  \/>Then-Texas House District 121 candidate Marc LaHood speaks during a campaign rally at The Barn Door Restaurant and Meat Market in 2024. Credit: Bria Woods \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>Last month the Texas Trial Lawyers Association PAC spent about $230,000 on mail and TV ads to help LaHood. After the end of the reporting period, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LaHood4Texas\/status\/2017325172378796297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">LaHood also had a fundraiser<\/a> with state House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock), a fellow defense attorney, and other colleagues from the legislature who are pitching in to help a popular freshman through his first reelection race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101036215.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">LaHood brought in<\/a> about $250,000 in the most recent reports, compared to McArthur\u2019s $150,000. <\/p>\n<p>They each spent about $220,000 on their campaigns, and LaHood reported about three times as much left on hand to spend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Texas House District 118: In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/john-lujan-frank-ramirez-texas-house-district-118\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/john-lujan-frank-ramirez-texas-house-district-118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Abbott spent big helping<\/a> Lujan flip this Southside, majority-Hispanic district, which is likely to be one of most competitive Texas House races again this November.<\/p>\n<p>Lujan is running for Congress instead of reelection, and in a three-way Republican primary to replace him, Abbott is now helping <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/jorge-borrego-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jorge Borrego<\/a>, an education policy expert who worked on Texas\u2019 landmark school voucher-style legislation while working at the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"492\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bria-woods-gov-greg-abbott-rally-march-1-primary-2-28-2022-6-scaled-e1666403237236-1000x631.jpg\" alt=\"State Rep. Credit: Bria Woods \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>Borrego <a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101036118.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">brought in $28,000<\/a> on the most recent reports, most of which was in-kind polling help from Abbott, who went to great lengths to install school choice supporters in the Texas House last cycle, and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AbbottCampaign\/status\/2014430502074060881\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">endorsed him<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also getting help from Texans for Lawsuit Reform, which wants to keep the Republican conference from adding another trial lawyer in his primary opponent, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/former-democrat-desi-martinez-runs-as-republican-texas-house-district-118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">personal injury attorney Desi Martinez<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez is a close friend of Lujan, who put $250,000 of his own money into the race during the last reporting period. This time around, <a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101035559.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Martinez\u2019s report<\/a> indicated he\u2019d raised about $10,000, and hired the Austin-based consulting firm Griffin Communications, which works with LaHood and Dorazio.<\/p>\n<p>A third Republican in that race, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/joseph-shellhart-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Joseph Shellhart<\/a>, has not reported any money raised. The winner will go up against Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/kristian-carranza-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kristian Carranza<\/a>, who is uncontested in her primary.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats: Three Democratic incumbents, state Reps. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/philip-cortez-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Philip Cortez<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/elizabeth-campos-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-119\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Liz Campos<\/a> and\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/barbara-gervin-hawkins-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-120\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Barbara Gervin-Hawkins<\/a>, face challengers who <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/afl-cio-labor-endorsements-2026-democratic-primaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">drew unusual endorsements from the state\u2019s largest labor group<\/a>, AFL-CIO, which represents teachers, communications workers and firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>While that support typically helps candidates with grassroots efforts, challengers still face a very uphill challenge keeping up with money incumbents can raise in the legislature, where donors and PACs can give unlimited sums of money.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Cortez, Campos and Gervin-Hawkins all received checks from the Texas Trial Lawyers Association ranging from $15,000 to $20,000 during the first part of January.<\/p>\n<p>Among the challengers, Gervin-Hawkins\u2019 opponent in <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/120\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas House District 120<\/a>, special education teacher <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/jordan-brown-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-120\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/jordan-brown-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-120\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jordan Brown<\/a>, raised the most on the last reports. Still, he <a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101034390.PDF\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101034390.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">brought in about $6,400<\/a>, far below the incumbent\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101035798.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">$30,000 haul<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/117\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas House District 117<\/a>, Cortez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethics.state.tx.us\/search\/cf\/SimpleSearchResults.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">brought in $64,000<\/a>, including $10,000 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2024\/02\/28\/elections-2024-pac-attacks-alexsandra-annello-state-rep-district-77\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">pro-charter school group Legacy 44 PAC<\/a>, funded by billionaires Michael Bloomberg and Jim Walton.<\/p>\n<p>Cortez\u2019s primary challenger, attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/robert-mihara-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Robert Mihara<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101035544.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">brought in $2,700<\/a> during that same span, and loaned his campaign another $4,400.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" data-id=\"5426546\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260110_SAReport_EndorsementForum_SW_0054_A.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5426546\"  \/>Robert Mihara, candidate for Texas House District 117,  speaks at the Tejano Democrats SD26 endorsement forum at Luby\u2019s on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026 in San Antonio. Credit: Salgu Wissmath for the San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/119\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/119\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas House District 119<\/a>, Campos <a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101036103.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">brought in $54,000<\/a> to challenger <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/ryan-ayala-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-119\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ryan Ayala<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101036538.PDF\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/prd.tecprd.ethicsefile.com\/public\/cf\/2026\/pdfs\/ScrubbedReport_101036538.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">$70 haul<\/a>, though Ayala loaned himself some money earlier in the race.<\/p>\n<p>Texas House District 125: Democrats have a crowded primary in the race to replace retiring <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/state-rep-ray-lopez-wont-seek-reelection-texas-house-district-125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">state Rep.
