AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced Sunday that two I-35 exits in downtown Austin are permanently closed.<\/p>\n
According to an X post<\/a> from the agency, the northbound I-35 Riverside Drive exit (233) and Holly Street entrance ramp and exit (234A) were shuttered on Sunday as part of TxDOT\u2019s I-35 Capital Express Central Project, specifically its Lady Bird Lake Segment.<\/p>\n Drivers will now need to exit early using the Woodland Avenue exit (232B).<\/p>\n The project\u2019s Lady Bird Lake Segment<\/a> includes reconstructing Lady Bird Lake bridge, creating a new road junction at Riverside Drive and adding two HOV lanes in both directions. According to TxDOT\u2019s website, the changes \u201cwill enhance safety and connectivity with a pedestrian-only bridge at Woodland Avenue, bike and pedestrian paths along the corridor and will accommodate future Capital Metro routes.\u201d<\/p>\n Other changes and closures will occur as the project continues, including the closure of Kenwood Avenue at Riverside Drive and a trail detour along Lady Bird Lake\u2019s north shore that will last until 2033.<\/p>\n The Lady Bird Lake Segment is one of many under the Capital Express Central Project. According to a tentative project phasing plan<\/a> from November, the Lady Bird Lake Segment will end in 2033. The University Segment, which includes US 290 East to MLK Jr. Boulevard, and the Downtown Segment, which includes MLK Jr. Boulevard to Holly Street, will also wrap up in 2033.<\/p>\n The Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard Segment will be completed this year, and a drainage tunnel and pump station under I-35 and Cesar Chavez will be installed by 2029.\u00a0<\/p>\n HEADS UP:\u202f Northbound I-35 Riverside Drive exit (233) and Holly Street entrance ramp and exit (234A) will be closed beginning Sunday, Feb. 1 to prepare for Lady Bird Lake bridge reconstruction.
