Former Houston personal injury attorney accused of stealing from clients arrested on Vegas gambling debt warrant<\/a><\/p>\nHistory of Concerns at Location<\/p>\n
The same parking lot had been the site of another unruly crowd incident two years ago, when community leaders say city officials promised to enforce an ordinance against such gatherings.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf that had happened, we wouldn\u2019t be here,\u201d said community activist Fred Woods, who criticized the organization of events that he says \u201cencourage trigger-happy thugs to show up and have free reign.\u201d<\/p>\n
Late Tuesday, the Mayor\u2019s Office told KPRC 2 News that since the gathering happened on private property, the City wouldn\u2019t be able to ban people from being there and that decision would be up to a private property owner, based on guidance received from the City Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n
Call for Stricter Regulations<\/p>\n
Neighborhood representatives are now pushing for a stronger ordinance with enhanced penalties for unplanned, pop-up events.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the first time that we\u2019ve had a tragedy in our community. And that is what the concern is, so this won\u2019t happen again,\u201d said Willie Nichols, President of the Northwood Manor Civic Club. \u201cWe\u2019re not saying that the trail rides can\u2019t happen or we\u2019re not saying that we don\u2019t want it to happen in our communities. We\u2019re just saying let\u2019s kind of have it in a more safe environment.\u201d <\/p>\n
Woods said strengthening the ordinance around unsanctioned events with punishments could \u201cdiscourage bad actors\u201d who plan the events and charge people to attend. <\/p>\n
He called on the council to begin revising the ordinance immediately.<\/p>\n
Investigation Ongoing<\/p>\n
Houston Mayor John Whitmire acknowledged the active homicide investigation, noting that \u201ctwo key witnesses\u201d remain hospitalized.<\/p>\n
Young\u2019s family expressed frustration with the level of communication from homicide investigators. <\/p>\n
Hill, whose father served 36 years with the city of Houston, described the lack of investigator engagement as \u201cvery concerning.\u201d<\/p>\n
After raising the concerns during the council meeting, Mayor Whitmire directed Hill to talk to a police representative at the meeting. <\/p>\n
The mayor said he\u2019s been told police are in touch with the victim\u2019s parents, but Hill disputed that claim.<\/p>\n
How to Help<\/p>\n
The Houston Police Department\u2019s Homicide Unit continues to investigate the shooting. No arrests have been made, according to a spokesperson on Tuesday afternoon. <\/p>\n
