If approved, the permits would allow the project to move forward at full scale.

The City of Sinton has formally protested the permits, raising concerns that pumping groundwater for Corpus Christi could deplete San Patricio County’s water supply. City officials say those fears are unfounded and emphasize the project’s broader regional benefits.

Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni met Monday with local industry leaders in hopes of building momentum ahead of the vote and countering resistance from neighboring communities.

“This is about helping out the region — not just Portland, not just Corpus Christi, but really a seven-county region,” Zanoni said. “That’s what our water infrastructure supports today, and the entire region benefits from the Evangeline project.”

As part of that push, Corpus Christi leaders attended a Portland City Council meeting Monday night to ask for the City’s support. Portland already purchases water from Corpus Christi, and officials say the project would help stabilize future supply for both cities.

“With the clock ticking, the pressure is on to find an ally in at least one San Patricio County city,” Zanoni said.

The debate over Evangeline comes as water concerns continue to intensify across Texas. In Central Texas, experts in Hays County report the Edwards Aquifer is nearing Stage 4 water emergency conditions after years of extreme heat and limited rainfall.

That situation could have downstream impacts locally. Water from the Edwards Aquifer feeds into the Frio and Nueces rivers, which in turn supply South Texas water systems.

At the same time, Corpus Christi officials report that combined lake levels have dropped to a historic low of 9.5 percent. The city remains under Stage 3 water restrictions. Officials have not yet called for the next phase of the water emergency plan.

Water quality is also emerging as a concern. Zanoni said arsenic levels in the City’s two lakes have been rising since at least 2024, likely due to drought conditions. He said the city blends water from multiple sources to dilute arsenic concentrations to remain within state safety standards.

The San Patricio Water District board’s decision Friday could determine whether the Evangeline Water Project moves ahead as planned or faces further delays amid growing regional debate

With a key vote days away, Corpus Christi is pushing for support on the Evangeline water project as…

[14
155,157,156
0":"post-150190","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-corpus-christi","8":"tag-corpus-christi","9":"tag-corpus-christi-headlines","10":"tag-corpus-christi-news
["GET
