LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) – An obscene chant shouted from Texas Tech students toward star Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson on Monday night late in the first half provided a bit of irony for No. 22 in blue\u2019s late game heroics.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s a (expletive),\u201d the crowd chanted at Peterson as he shot free throws with seconds remaining in the first half.<\/p>\n
But it was Peterson — and Kansas head coach Bill Self — getting the last laugh when the clock hit zeros Monday night in Lubbock. The star freshman connected on a pair of 3-pointers that tied the game at 61-61 and gave Kansas a game-sealing 64-61 lead over the Red Raiders.<\/p>\n
Tuesday night during his weekly \u2018Hawk Talk\u2019 show, Self thanked the Red Raiders\u2019 student section for their role in the proceedings.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was obviously a little chant that was going on,\u201d Self acknowledged. \u201cAnd thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The crowd at Johnny\u2019s West restaurant in Lawrence laughed following Self\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n
\u201cHonestly, I don\u2019t think that had anything to do with whether the ball goes in the hole or not,\u201d Self continued. \u201cI don\u2019t believe that, but thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Peterson struggled for much of the night in Lubbock, but finished the night with a game-high 19 points in KU\u2019s first road win over a top 15 team since 2020.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were a lot of things that happened and then a guy that kind of went unnoticed there for a while just said, \u2018Hey, jump on boys. Let\u2019s go for a little ride now,\u2019\u201d Self said. \u201cThat was fun to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n
Peterson\u2019s late-game shots came at the end of a career-high 35 minutes in a KU uniform and featured great elevation on his jump shot form, Self noted.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo me, the great thing is that was after 35 minutes of playing time,\u201d the KU coach said, \u201che elevated like that in a situation where he\u2019s been struggling with his legs some, so that was great to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
Self then pointed out KU\u2019s student section chanted \u201coverrated\u201d at BYU star freshman AJ Dybantsa during Saturday\u2019s Jayhawk win over the Cougars.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe did the same thing to AJ and it\u2019s not right,\u201d Self said. \u201cOur students don\u2019t need to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
KU gets several days off before returning to Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday against Utah. The game against the Utes tips off at 1:30 p.m. CT.<\/p>\n
