{"id":150471,"date":"2026-02-04T10:57:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T10:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/150471\/"},"modified":"2026-02-04T10:57:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T10:57:09","slug":"houston-concert-watch-2-4-gipsy-kings-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/150471\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston Concert Watch 2\/4: Gipsy Kings and More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like many awards shows, the Grammys sometimes seem to be more about style than substance.\u00a0 Chappell Roan created a ruckus on the red carpet with a Thierry Mugler dress that was both backless and frontless, utilizing nipple piercings to hold up some of the fabric.\u00a0 Afterward, Roan rather disingenuously explained, \u201cI don\u2019t even think this is that outrageous of an outfit.\u201d\u00a0 OK, hotshot.<\/p>\n<p>From a rock and roll standpoint, highlights included Robert Smith and the Cure winning their first Grammy after 50 years of recording and touring for \u201cAlone\u201d (Best Alternative Music Performance) and Songs of a Lost World (Best Alternative Music Album).\u00a0 Also noteworthy was Joni Mitchell winning her 11th Grammy for Joni Mitchell Archives \u2013 Vol. 4: The Asylum Years (Best Historical Album) and Yungblud picking up the Best Rock Performance award for \u201cChanges,\u201d a cover of the Black Sabbath song played at Ozzy Osbourne\u2019s Back to the Beginning concert this past summer.<\/p>\n<p>But, on balance, there was not much in the way of rock and roll contained within the Grammys telecast.\u00a0 And by \u201cnot much,\u201d I mean \u201cdamn near none.\u201d\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing: \u00a0the rock, metal and alternative categories were passed out during what was termed the \u201cpremiere ceremony,\u201d which took place prior to the televised portion of the Grammy Awards.\u00a0 That\u2019s a hell of a note.\u00a0 Rock may not be dead just yet, but in the minds of some, evidently, it was, to quote Monty Python, \u201ccoughing up blood last night!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ticket Alert<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770202628_732_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube video\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" nopin=\"nopin\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The reasons behind Chris and Rich Robinson\u2019s rapprochement about seven years ago have been questioned in many quarters.\u00a0 At the time, some believed that the brothers did not want to see the Black Crowes\u2019 legacy die and so buried the hatchet.\u00a0 And, to be clear, not in each other\u2019s backs.\u00a0 Those of a more cynical bent speculated that the Robinsons needed money and figured the time was right for a Black Crowes renaissance, what with (at the time) the 30th anniversary of the band\u2019s debut album Shake Your Money Maker coming up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since then, things (at least from the outside) seem to be going swimmingly for the Crowes.\u00a0 The band\u2019s most recent album, Happiness Bastards (2024) received positive critical notices and sold as well as any record can these days.\u00a0 With A Pound of Feathers set for release in March, the Crowes will be on the road this summer, appearing at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandscenter.org\/events\/2026\/black-crowes-and-whiskey-myers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion<\/a> on Saturday, August 8.\u00a0 Presales are in progress, and the general ticket sale will begin on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770202628_899_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube video\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" nopin=\"nopin\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Few people kept the blues alive \u2013 and even expanded its popularity \u2013 like Robert Cray did during the \u201880s and \u201890s with albums like Strong Persuader and Don\u2019t Be Afraid of the Dark.\u00a0 Following many years of working closely with Eric Clapton, Cray parted company with Slowhand in 2021 over his comparison of COVID-era restrictions and slavery.\u00a0 It probably cost him exposure and money, but Cray honored his convictions.  Nevertheless, Cray seems to be doing just fine, thank you, and he is booked for a concert at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prekindle.com\/event\/35896-robert-cray-houston\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heights Theater<\/a> on Wednesday, April 29.<\/p>\n<p>Ne-Yo and Akon\u2019s \u201cNights Like This\u201d tour arrives at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandscenter.org\/events\/2026\/neyo-akon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pavilion<\/a> on Sunday, August 9.\u00a0 The concert will be a co-headlining affair, and organizers promise a slew of \u201cera-defining hits.\u201d\u00a0 Tickets are on sale now, with Akon meet-and-greet and photo op packages available.\u00a0 Ne-Yo?\u00a0 Evidently, not so much.<\/p>\n<p>UB-40 was established during the dismal early years of Margaret Thatcher\u2019s tenure as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.\u00a0 This is significant, in that \u201cUB-40\u201d stood for \u201cUnemployment Benefit Form 40.\u201d\u00a0 The band members weren\u2019t on the dole for long, however, as UB-40 built a substantial career, bringing reggae to the masses worldwide while selling over 100 million records.\u00a0 Catch them on Sunday, November 8, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketmaster.com\/ub40-the-unstoppable-tour-2026-houston-texas-11-08-2026\/event\/3A0064378E3C743B?_gl=1*zxq15x*_ga*MTQxODUzMzI2Ni4xNzcwMTU4NjM1*_ga_C1T806G4DF*czE3NzAxNjUzNTYkbzIkZzEkdDE3NzAxNjUzNjAkajU2JGwwJGgw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">House of Blues<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Concerts This Week<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770202628_980_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube video\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" nopin=\"nopin\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Sorry, Gipsy Kings, but (like many others) I find it difficult to listen to your tremendous cover of the Eagles\u2019 \u201cHotel California\u201d without seeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SEcjLgvDJn4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Turturro<\/a> pulling up purple dress socks, licking a bowling ball, and generally cavorting about after throwing a strike in The Big Lebowski.\u00a0 But, when you think about it, the association is not all bad.\u00a0 Catch the Kings on Friday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartfinancialcentre.net\/events\/gipsy-kings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Smart Financial Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770202629_240_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube video\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" nopin=\"nopin\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And speaking of The Big Lebowski, Jimmie Dale Gilmore will perform on both Friday and Saturday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgonigels.com\/shows\/dave-alvin-jimmie-dale-gilmore-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mucky Duck<\/a>.\u00a0 As you may recall, Gilmore played the role of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tjN5q9Ixen4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Smokey<\/a>, a member of the Dude\u2019s bowling league who allegedly slid over the line and was threatened with \u201ca world of pain\u201d by Walter Sobchack.\u00a0 Gilmore\u2019s delivery of the line, \u201cAlright, it\u2019s fucking zero.\u00a0 Are you happy, you crazy fuck?\u201d is a performance for the ages.\u00a0\u00a0 Having said that, Gilmore would probably prefer that I focus on his most recent album, TexiCali, a collaboration with Dave Alvin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770202629_98_hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube video\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\" nopin=\"nopin\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Also at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgonigels.com\/shows\/west-texas-exiles-late-show\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Duck<\/a> on Friday and Saturday are the West Texas Exiles, a band that includes Gilmore\u2019s son Colin.\u00a0 The Exiles have been garnering serious attention in Americana circles by virtue of steady touring and an outstanding debut album, 8000 Days.
