3 westbound lanes on Katy Freeway at Gessner shut down<\/p>\n
HOUSTON \u2013 A burglary suspect is dead following a crash along the Katy Freeway Tuesday morning, according to Houston police.<\/p>\n
Police say the crash happened just before 3:30 a.m. near Witte Road and involved a maroon sedan carrying three people. Investigators say the suspects had just burglarized an AutoZone on Gessner Road, where they stole several car batteries before leaving the scene.<\/p>\n
HPD says the vehicle traveled south on Witte Road before crashing into a wall along the Katy Freeway feeder road. All three people inside the car were trapped, and Houston Fire Department crews had to extricate them from the vehicle.<\/p>\n
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other occupants were taken to the hospital with injuries.<\/p>\n
Police said this was not a car chase. Officers say they were searching for the suspect vehicle when they came across the crash and later found the stolen car batteries inside the car.<\/p>\n
