Dallas-based Balerion Space Ventures has invested in Machina Labs\u2019 Series C financing and the development of Machina\u2019s first large-scale \u201cintelligent factory.\u201d The Series C for the L.A.-based company totaled $124 million; the amount of Balerion\u2019s investment was not disclosed.<\/p>\n

Also investing in the round were Woven Capital, Toyota\u2019s growth-stage venture arm, Lockheed Martin Ventures, and the Strategic Development Fund.<\/p>\n

A leader in advanced manufacturing and robotics, Machina Labs said it\u2019s scaling \u201cfrom breakthrough manufacturing technology to deploying software-defined production infrastructure capable of supporting mission-critical metal structures across defense, aerospace, and advanced mobility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Building \u2018manufacturing backbone\u2019 for modern defense systems<\/p>\n

Phil Scully, co-founder and general partner at Balerion Space Ventures, said modern defense systems \u201care often limited not by design, but by how fast they can be manufactured.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMachina Labs is building the manufacturing backbone required to close that gap and operate as a true Tier 1 partner,\u201d Scully added in a statement.<\/p>\n

Edward Mehr, Machina\u2019s CEO and co-founder, said \u201cthe world\u2019s most advanced designs are being held back by 20th-century factories.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis round allows us to scale manufacturing infrastructure that moves at the speed of software,\u201d Mehr added. \u201cWe\u2019re not just making parts\u2014we\u2019re reprogramming the factory itself to serve defense, aerospace, and automotive customers who can\u2019t afford to wait.\u201d<\/p>\n

Launching its first large-scale intelligent factory in the U.S.<\/p>\n

A \u201csignificant portion\u201d of the newly raised capital will be used to launch Machina Labs\u2019 first large-scale Intelligent Factory in the U.S.\u2014a 200,000-square-foot, production-ready facility that will house up to 50 of the company\u2019s RoboCraftsman cells and produce thousands of complex structural assemblies annually for defense and aerospace customers, the company said.<\/p>\n

From missile structures to airframes, Machina Labs\u2019 intelligent factory is designed to manufacture \u201ca wide range of complex metal structures,\u201d without significant retooling or reconfiguration. Powered by Machina Labs\u2019 RoboCraftsman platform, the intelligent factory will enable customers to move from digital design to production inside the same facility, \u201ccompressing timelines from months to days,\u201d Machina said.<\/p>\n

Balerion\u2014a Dallas \u201cfrontier tech capital firm\u201d backing the infrastructure of the emerging space and national security economy\u2014has been on something of a buying spree lately. A week ago, the firm announced its investment in El Segundo, California-based Northwood Space\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0 $100 million Series B round.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In December, Balerion announced investments in three pioneering technology companies that the company said are at the center of \u201ca fundamental shift\u201d in how America builds, powers, and operates critical infrastructure beyond Earth\u2019s surface: Antares Industries, Samara Aerospace, and Valar Atomics<\/a>.<\/p>\n
