(Jacob Sanchez | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>The Texas Education Agency this week named former assistant attorney general Levi Fuller as the state\u2019s first Inspector General of Educator Misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>In the newly created role, Fuller will closely oversee TEA policies and processes to help \u201cfoster safe learning environments for the state\u2019s 5.5 million public school students,\u201d the agency\u2019s announcement said.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said Fuller, who also served as former chief of staff for Republican state Rep. Andy Hopper, has more than a decade holding bad actors to account, and Fuller will help root out \u201cflawed\u201d teachers. He\u2019ll participate in certification sanctions, placement on the Do Not Hire Registry, settlement decisions and case closures. He\u2019ll also offer guidance and recommendations to the State Board for Educator Certification.<\/p>\n<p>Texas recently enacted tougher school oversight including aK-12 DEI ban and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.keranews.org\/texas-news\/2026-02-04\/texas-education-walkouts-tea-takeover-ice\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">guidance on stopping student walkouts<\/a> amid protests over immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/education\/2026\/02\/04\/542549\/ice-protest-houston-school-tea\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas state leaders target school walkouts as students rally for Houston teen detained by ICE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Zeph Capo, president of the teachers group Texas AFT, raised concerns \u201cthat this new position will be weaponized against educators over political differences or frivolous allegations of misconduct.\u201d He urged the TEA and Fuller to protect teachers\u2019 due process rights.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Zeeble is KERA\u2019s education reporter.
