EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 A local historian is shedding light on the significant role El Paso played during the Mexican Revolution. <\/p>\n
David Romo, a historian specializing in the U.S. and Mexican border, emphasized El Paso’s strategic importance. <\/p>\n
“El Paso was one of the most important cities, not only in the United States but in Mexico in terms of launching the Mexican Revolution,” Romo said. <\/p>\n
He noted that Pancho Villa frequently visited El Paso due to its proximity to the border, using the city as a recruitment and hiding ground. <\/p>\n
Claudia A. Rivers, head of special collections at UTEP, highlighted the extensive research interest in Pancho Villa, stating, “It is a popular research topic, and we have dozens of books about Pancho Villa.” <\/p>\n
She also mentioned Villa’s connections with notable figures, including General Hugh Scott and General Pershing. <\/p>\n
Shirley Garber, president of the Columbus Historical Society, remarked on the historical significance of the revolution, noting its long-term social effects. <\/p>\n
“Whether you think he was a good man or a bad man, it was a part of history,” Garber said. The Mexican Revolution’s impact extended beyond El Paso, influencing both the United States and Mexico.<\/p>\n
