The first parks were opened to the public in the 1930s and the newest,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/state-parks\/old-tunnel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Old Tunnel State Park;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Old Tunnel State Park<\/a>, opened in 2012. TPWD also has plans to develop five sites into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/state-parks\/park-information\/future-parks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:future state parks;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">future state parks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">TPWD splits the state into seven \u2018natural regions,\u2019 each of which is home to several state parks. The Prairies &amp; Lakes region is home to 21 parks, more than any other region. The South Texas Plains region is home to the fewest, with seven parks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Across the system, state parks welcomed more than 9.2 million visitors in 2025, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/most-visited-state-park-texas-140000220.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:0.5% increase from the previous year;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">0.5% increase from the previous year<\/a>. The Prairies &amp; Lakes region recorded the most visitors, with more than 3 million across its parks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Hill Country region welcomed more than 2.1 million visitors across 16 parks, while the Pineywoods, Panhandle Plains and Gulf Coast regions each saw more than 1 million visitors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">State parks in the Big Bend Country region saw the fewest number of visitors, with around 495,000. Those numbers do not include visitors to Big Bend National Park, which alone saw more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/bibe\/learn\/management\/statistics.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:560,000 visitors in 2024;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">560,000 visitors in 2024<\/a> (2025 numbers are not yet available).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Looking for a specific season? The tramway has been closed since September 2018 due to safety concerns. The park welcomed 22,290 visitors in 2025, an 11.5% decrease from 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">9. The park welcomed 21,198 visitors in 2025, a 2.7% increase over 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">8. The park welcomed 17,148 visitors in 2025, an 8.7% decrease over 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">7. The park welcomed 11,220 visitors in 2025, a 7.7% increase from 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">5. Guests can stay in one of 39 rooms at the full-service hotel within the Davis Mountains State Park. The lodge welcomed 8,477 visitors in 2025, a 100% increase from 2024, when it was closed for renovations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">4. The site welcomed 8,277 visitors in 2025, a 2.5% increase over 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">3.
