AUSTIN (KXAN) \u2013 Austinites gathered on Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of the Wishbone Bridge and Unity Underpass.<\/p>\n

The ribbon cutting followed words from Mayor Kirk Watson, Congressman Lloyd Doggett, Greg Casar and others.<\/p>\n

The bridge has 10 miles of trail to run, bike and hike, as well as the new Unity Underpass that features artwork from over 200 contributors.<\/p>\n

Avid runner Mo Saab had been training for the Austin marathon. He detailed why this bridge will not only help his training but also reconnect the community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m running a half-marathon, it\u2019s really exciting for me to run the whole loop. I\u2019ve been waiting for this to finish,\u201d said Sabb. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of exciting to see all these people here and gathering \u2013 It\u2019s a community event that will benefit everyone \u2026 to see the riverside area vibing again, it\u2019s a good time for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Unity Underpass, now opened, has a passage under Pleasant Valley Road, which has allowed pedestrians to avoid traffic.<\/p>\n

Austin resident Jackie Lain, ecstatic about the new tunnel, further explained the importance of the improvements.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m proud of the city \u2026 before we had to cross the street in order to come to this side of Austin, that was always a bit treacherous,\u201d said Lain. \u201cNow we have a safe and beautiful pass through to get to the other side. It will help the community enjoy the leisure aspects of this bridge a whole lot more.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Wishbone bridge project was funded through the city\u2019s 2020 mobility Bond, at a total cost of about $22 million.<\/p>\n
