A video clip from a Dec. 31, 2024 interview featuring Texas House Democratic leader Gene Wu has spread widely on social media this week, drawing national backlash and renewed scrutiny of Wu\u2019s public record.<\/p>\n

In the interview, recorded and released on December 31, Wu discusses political unity among minority communities and says, \u201cThe day the Latino, African American, Asian and other communities realize that they share the same oppressor is the day we start winning because we are the majority in this country now. We have the ability to take over this country and to do what is needed for everyone and to make things fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

The clip has circulated widely on X, where it has drawn significant reaction.<\/p>\n

The remarks drew a response from Elon Musk, who criticized the clip on X, writing, \u201cShame on him.\u201d Musk\u2019s post further amplified the video\u2019s reach.<\/p>\n

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz also weighed in, posting on X, \u201cThe Democrat party is built on bigotry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wu made the comments during a podcast interview<\/a> with journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, in which the two discussed immigration, race, and political power in Texas.<\/p>\n

Wu serves as Minority Leader of the Texas House of Representatives and leads<\/a> the Texas House Democratic Caucus. His leadership role comes amid heightened partisan tensions following quorum-breaking walkouts<\/a> by House Democrats during the 2025 redistricting special session.<\/p>\n

As previously reported by The Dallas Express<\/a>, Wu and other House Democrats were later assessed fines totaling $9,354.25 each for their role in the 14-day walkout. The penalties were confirmed by House Administration Committee Chair Charlie Geren in a letter addressed to Wu and stemmed from daily fines and costs incurred by the state while attempting to compel attendance.<\/p>\n

Wu has previously faced backlash for inflammatory public remarks. In 2023, The Dallas Express<\/a> reported on comments in which Wu said he was \u201cgood\u201d with Republicans dying from COVID-19, remarks that drew widespread criticism and were later deleted. Wu defended the statements at the time in follow-up social media posts rather than retracting them.<\/p>\n
