“We want to commend the students who came forward and reported to school staff that the suspect had a gun,” Arlington PD said in the release. “As a result, we were able to work with our partners at Arlington ISD to swiftly intercept the student and prevent any kind of harm from happening. As we say frequently, if you see something, say something. It does make a difference.”

Arlington ISD provided an email sent to McNutt Elementary parents on the incident from the school’s principal:

“Several students came to me to report that another student had a weapon. My administration team and security officer immediately started investigating. We confirmed there was a prohibited item, and it was immediately confiscated by our security officer. As with any prohibited weapon, Arlington Police were notified and responded. The student will be charged with terroristic threat, a felony. Thus adhering to the Student Code of Conduct when it comes
To disciplinary measures. Please be assured that we work closely with the police to investigate any potential threat to the safety of our school and community.

I am grateful for the students who spoke up and let us know. Please remind your students how important it is to let a teacher or adult know whenever they see or hear anything suspicious. See something, say something.

We put McNutt in shelter out of an abundance of caution while Arlington police investigated. We normally notify parents as soon as a shelter is issued, but the messaging system we currently use, Finalsite, is currently experiencing a nationwide outage. This outage began on Sunday and they hope to have the system fully restored by Wednesday evening. The shelter ended before we could execute the workaround.
