Former Fort Worth City Council member Gyna Bivens has died at age 71, city officials say.<\/p>\n
Bivens served on the Fort Worth City Council from 2013 to 2025, representing east Fort Worth. Her time on the council included time as mayor pro tem. She did not seek reelection and left office last year. In October, Bivens publicly announced she was undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.<\/p>\n
Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker said in a statement that Bivens was a longtime advocate for neighborhoods in east Fort Worth and across the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cGyna Bivens was a champion for our communities and dedicated years of service to Fort Worth,\u201d Parker said.<\/p>\n
Bivens grew up in Fort Worth\u2019s Stop Six neighborhood and graduated from Dunbar High School. She later earned a degree from the University of North Texas.<\/p>\n
Before her election to the council, Bivens worked in broadcast journalism, holding positions at television stations in San Antonio and Dallas. She also worked as a reporter at KRLD radio in the 1990s.<\/p>\n
Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.<\/p>\n
