I’m not talking about the inspirational quote kind. I’m talking about the trial-and-error, emotionally scarred, never again kind.

We asked Lubbock folks to tell us what they avoid altogether because it always turns into a massive disaster, and the answers are nothing short of fantastic advice. Check them out below…

For starters, the obvious: Grocery shopping on a Saturday. That’s not shopping. It’s more like a psychological endurance test. The same can be said of a trip to the DMV, which was mentioned by multiple people with zero explanation needed. You can’t just go in “real quick.” No. You emerge three hours later, sweaty and wondering if you’re still alive.

Photo by Sander Sammy on Unsplash

Human interactions also ranked surprisingly high. Lubbock has tons of friendly people. But the friendliness comes with small talk, a little eye contact, and sometimes conversations you didn’t quite consent to at the gas station. Several people admitted they go out of their way to avoid socializing with family and the general public whenever humanly possible. Respect.

Read More: Lubbock’s Spring Forecast: Warmer Days And Stormy Nights Ahead

Relationships were another popular answer for things to avoid at all costs, which is very on-brand for a town where everyone has dated the same three people. Secrets also don’t do well here, so avoiding someone who is already married is a given.

Photo by Priscilla Du Preez 🇨🇦 on Unsplash

Then, there were a few truly cautionary tales, like trusting West Texas weather apps, engaging in arguments online, and letting out a toot when your tummy hasn’t been feeling well. These were more like public service announcements and should probably be written down somewhere.

The moral of this ridiculous story? In Lubbock, avoidance isn’t being antisocial; it’s just basic self-preservation. We’ve all learned that some things in life just don’t deserve a second chance. Sometimes, the most West Texas move a person can make is simply saying, “Nah, I’m good,” and going the heck home.

Keep scrolling for more silly Lubbock fun in the galleries below…

What Went Wrong on Your Date?
