ARLINGTON, Texas \u2014 The release of an odorizer prompted a gas leak scare that caused all Arlington ISD schools to briefly keep students indoors on Tuesday, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the fire department received multiple calls from residents reporting the odor of natural gas in various parts of the city, the Arlington Fire Department said in a statement<\/p>\n
In a social media post, Arlington ISD said there was a major gas leak in the city of Arlington and that the smell of gas was reported at multiple locations. In response, the district asked all schools to remain indoors and refrain from outdoor activities, the post reads.<\/p>\n
However, the city of Arlington quickly clarified that there was no gas leak. Instead, there was a release of an odorizer, called mercaptan, at a compressor station, Atmos Energy told the city of Arlington.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mercaptan is intentionally added to odorless natural gas to give it a detectable odor, allowing people to identify gas leaks, the fire department said. The gas has a strong smell even at low levels, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The smell spread throughout the city when there was an overpressurization of mercaptan at a compression station in South Arlington, which required a controlled release of the gas. Southerly winds caused the odor to travel across Arlington, the fire department said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Residents reported smelling a gas-like smell in areas as far north as Lamar Boulevard, the statement reads.\u00a0<\/p>\n
