As the founder of the Latino Arts Project, Jorge Baldor<\/a> has long explored the intertwined history between North and South America. Through his curation of \u201cThe Journey North: Hope, Labor and Culture\u201d at the Latino Cultural Center, his nuanced look at one of the most fractious issues of our time transcends media, yet the message remains the same.<\/p>\n

Showcasing more than 40 works by emerging and established artists, including a talented high school student, \u201cThe Journey North\u201d fills two galleries and highlights many facets of the immigrant experience. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe first gallery addresses the journey itself,\u201d Baldor explains. \u201cThe other examines hope, labor and culture.\u201d <\/p>\n

With works by artists from seven countries, standouts include Oliver Parr\u2019s Lego Rio Grande Valley sculpture The Divide, Jesus Alba\u2019s life-size canvas and steel The Border (with a photograph of his immigrant father) and Karla Ramirez-Santin\u2019s Monarch migration-inspired mixed-media piece, Nos Cortaron las Alas y Aun Volamos.<\/p>\n

Baldor feels the timing is ideal for a show of this scope, especially as immigration permeates every part of our culture, from Congress to the Super Bowl. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think right now the climate we have is so divided, and just having this topic to talk about is so important,\u201d he says. \u201cThe point of this exhibit is to have a public conversation in humanizing the process \u2014 why people come, what they bring and how they enrich life. My grandmother used to say the greatness of America is the goodness of its people.\u201d <\/p>\n
