Smith will remain in the role for 30 days under the conditions of his contract.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Elida Castillo told KRIS 6 News the vote followed the council\u2019s first opportunity to complete an evaluation of Smith\u2019s job performance, which had been delayed in January because Smith was not available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis time he was at the meeting, and so as a council, we went back, we discussed job performance, and then the decision was made to do a unilateral separation per the conditions of his contract,\u201d Castillo said.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo said the decision came after what she described as a difficult few months for the city, pointing to ongoing tensions between Smith and council members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t an easy decision,\u201d Castillo said. \u201cAfter careful consideration of all the circumstances that we have been through in the last 2.5 months, it was pretty obvious that this wasn\u2019t a situation that was good for the community or for us as a council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As previously reported, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/san-patricio-county\/taft\/taft-city-manager-files-lawsuit-against-city-council\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Smith sued the city council after accusing officials of violating the Texas Open Meetings Act<\/a> at an improperly noticed November 14 meeting and interfering with his authority to manage city operations.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo said the lawsuit was among the actions that raised concerns about whether Smith was willing to work with the council moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763006530_38_\" alt=\"TAFT FINANCE - 1.png\"  width=\"1280\" height=\"855\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Adam Beam<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need somebody who\u2019s gonna be prioritizing the concerns of the community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In January, <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/san-patricio-county\/taft\/appeals-court-denies-taft-city-managers-motion-to-dismiss-councils-appeal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Thirteenth Court of Appeals denied a motion by Smith that sought to dismiss an appeal filed against him<\/a> by the mayor and councilmembers. The court\u2019s order, issued Jan. 13, allowed the appeal to proceed.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo said the city will now begin the process of reposting the city manager position, while also assessing what steps need to be taken during Smith\u2019s remaining 30 days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in the figuring out stage,\u201d Castillo said. \u201cIt\u2019s not one that we\u2019re prepared for, but we need to do this as professionally and as cleanly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith has been the volunteer fire chief for the City of Taft since October 2021.
