EL PASO, Texas (KTSM<\/a>) \u2014 A student from Dr. Sue A. Shook Elementary School was surprised with an award by the mayor of El Paso.<\/p>\n

Fifth-grader Robin Isabella Mota received Mayor Renard Johnson\u2019s Team of Excellence award for the month of February.<\/p>\n

Mota was not only recognized for her straight-A\u2019s but also for her invention, ThermoGuard: a bracelet that changes color based on body temperature.<\/p>\n

She says the inspiration for the invention came from her brother. Her family travels a lot, and Mota says sometimes they will forget to bring a thermometer to check her brother\u2019s temperature. The family wouldn\u2019t know when the brother had a fever until he spoke up.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought, why not make something, an everyday thing, that kids would wear easily to anywhere that would change color, from black to white, when a kid has a fever?\u201d Mota said.<\/p>\n

Mota said she entered her bracelet into the Socorro ISD\u2019s science fair, winning first place. Outside of academics, Mota also serves on her school\u2019s student council. Mota is also trilingual in English, Spanish, and French.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer curiosity, leadership, and creativity make me really excited about the future of El Paso. Can\u2019t wait to see what she does next,\u201d Johnson said in a Facebook post<\/a>.<\/p>\n
