The next day, Jakes\u2019 lawyers sued Youngblood for defamation, alleging that the former minister was attempting to \u201cextort him for millions of dollars.\u201d The lawsuit said Youngblood\u2019s allegations had contributed to Jakes\u2019 health crisis. <\/p>\n
The lawsuit remained in the pre-litigation stage for almost a year. This February, Youngblood\u2019s brother, Richard Youngblood, alleged in an affidavit that he, too, had experienced unwanted sexual advances from Jakes. <\/p>\n
In a February sworn affidavit, Jakes vehemently denied both brothers\u2019 allegations. \u201cThe statements in these affidavits purport to describe situations where I harbored carnal desires for these men,\u201d he said. \u201cThese statements are knowingly and flagrantly false.\u201d<\/p>\n
In June, Youngblood\u2019s former attorney filed to withdraw from the case after Jakes\u2019 attorneys accused him of making up some of the quotes in his filings. <\/p>\n

In a June order, U.S. District Judge William Stickman IV said Blackburn\u2019s conduct was \u201ca clear ethical violation of the highest order\u201d and ordered Blackburn to appear in court to defend himself from potential sanctions. <\/p>\n
Blackburn admitted to the fabricated quotations and said he had used a new AI program to draft the briefs at issue. <\/p>\n
Stickman sanctioned Blackburn earlier this month, ordering the attorney to pay a $5,000 fine to Jakes\u2019 lawyers. The judge said Blackburn\u2019s errors went beyond an \u201cinnocent mistake,\u201d highlighting Blackburn\u2019s response when Jakes\u2019 counsel first pointed out the fabricated and misrepresented quotes. <\/p>\n
\u201c[T]he Court believes that monetary sanctions are necessary to deter Blackburn from future misconduct \u2014 especially due to his decision to double-down on his misuse of AI after it was brought to the attention of the court,\u201d Stickman wrote in his decision.<\/p>\n
Jakes founded The Potter\u2019s House in 1996 and grew it to 30,000 members, according to the church\u2019s website<\/a>.
