Roses are red. Violets are blue. And apparently, no one in Lubbock has ever taken this poem seriously, and thank God for that.

The RockShow asked people to finish the classic line; the responses quickly veered from romance to emotional damage, political commentary, unhinged confessions, and at least one refrigerator. Which, honestly, feels correct for this strange city.

Some people went straight for the feelings. One response took the nursery rhyme and quietly turned it into a gut punch:

“Roses are red, violets are blue, That’s not a poem. That’s a realization you have while staring at the ceiling at 2 a.m.

Photo by Anya Chernykh on Unsplash

Others kept it short and sincere, which somehow made it funnier. One person simply offered:

“Roses are red, violets are blue, Perfect. No notes. That’s a text you send and then immediately throw your phone across the room.

Photo by Betty Miyashiro on Unsplash

Then came the chaos, which is where Lubbock truly shines. Romance quickly gave way to honesty, regret, and questionable decision-making:

“Roses are red, violets are blue, Another reminded us that perspective is everything:

“Roses are red, violets are blue, Read More: The Funny Side Of Valentine’s: Lubbock’s Relationship Realities

Photo by Gala Iv on Unsplash

Some poems felt less like flirting and more like a warning label:

“Roses are red, violets are blue, And then there were the ones that abandoned poetry entirely and somehow became iconic anyway:

“Roses are grey, violets are pencil, Which, frankly, belongs in a museum.

Photo by Wiktoria Skrzekotowska on Unsplash

What all of this proves is that Lubbock doesn’t do roses-and-candlelight romance. We do it awkwardly, self-aware, a little unhinged, and occasionally profound by accident. These poems weren’t polished, but they were honest—and that feels like the most Lubbock love language there is.

Roses are red. Violets are blue. I confused survival with loving you.
Called it ‘depth,’ called it ‘being true,’
Turns out love should return you too.”

I’m a big fan of you.”

Vodka is cheaper than dinner for two.”

Waking up in prison next to Bubba
Sure made me appreciate you.”

I liked you more
Before I really knew you.”

I’m not good at poems,
Refrigerator.”

We asked for poems.
You gave us the truth.
