{"id":163622,"date":"2026-02-13T20:03:21","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T20:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/163622\/"},"modified":"2026-02-13T20:03:21","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T20:03:21","slug":"students-in-arlington-mansfield-walk-out-to-protest-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/163622\/","title":{"rendered":"Students in Arlington, Mansfield walk out to protest ICE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"&quot;byline&quot;\">by Chris Moss and Bianca Rodriguez-Mora, Arlington Report <br \/>February 13, 2026<\/p>\n<p>As Seguin High sophomore Janelle walked to the corner of Silo and Eden roads in Arlington, a green shirt with a Mexican flag stitched on the back draped over her shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Worry, anger and fear all washed over her as she stood next to classmates and wondered what the consequences would be for walking out of school to protest recent deportations and deadly shootings related to immigration enforcement. Then she remembered her grandmother, who inspired her to attend Thursday\u2019s protest in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe came here as an immigrant,\u201d Janelle said. \u201cSo I feel like I should be out here and show her that I can do it, and I can protect people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Janelle was one of many in Arlington and Mansfield who participated in walkouts this week to protest against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrations were the latest in a string of student-led events across North Texas as tensions continue to rise surrounding immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260212_Moss-Rodriguez-Mora-AISD-MISD-10-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-406884\"\/>Senior Abagail chants during a districtwide student walkout Feb. 12 at Mansfield High School. (Christine Vo | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>Recently, state officials <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2026\/02\/05\/student-walkouts-prompt-warning-from-texas-leaders-raising-first-amendment-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">warned public school district administrators<\/a> that they may be subject to a state takeover if they assist in what Gov. Greg Abbott described as \u201cinappropriate political activism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Arlington school district officials said that they did not facilitate any of the walkouts.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Seguin High School students met behind the Arlington campus before walking nearly 2 miles to the corner of Sublett and Matlock roads.<\/p>\n<p>Arlington police officers followed and drove alongside the students. In a statement, Arlington Police Department officials said they were in discussions with school administrators to identify possible walkouts and monitor those participating to keep them safe.<\/p>\n<p>Police officials added that they had not encountered any safety concerns with any student walkouts so far.<\/p>\n<p>Mansfield Police Department officials did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, students from multiple Arlington high schools walked out, protesting at City Hall.<\/p>\n<p>During the Thursday protest, Seguin junior Dakota said the conditions in immigration detention centers are not just, adding he is Native American and that nobody is illegal on land stolen from his ancestors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody\u2019s safe at this point, and it\u2019s just completely wrong,\u201d Dakota said.<\/p>\n<p>Arlington ISD officials said students who skipped class to participate in the protest would be marked absent. <a href=\"https:\/\/tea.texas.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/taa-2026-02-03-district-attendance-policies-complaints-and-educator-responsibilities.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas Education Agency officials<\/a> reminded public school administrators that \u201cstudents must face the consequences of their actions during the school day, including potentially being assigned an unexcused absence\u201d if they participate in walkouts.<\/p>\n<p>Dakota said he was glad AISD administrators were not imposing a harsher punishment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really glad that (Arlington ISD) did like the bare minimum to allow the students to still protest but still be in line with the TEA,\u201d Dakota said.<\/p>\n<p>At Mansfield High School, about 60 students emerged from the back entrance, holding signs reading \u201cNo Human Is Illegal\u201d and \u201cImmigrants Make America Great.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/20260212_Moss-Rodriguez-Mora-AISD-MISD-6-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-406885\"\/>Students carry signs while chanting during a districtwide student walkout Feb. 12 at Mansfield High School. (Christine Vo | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>Mansfield senior Abagail held a sign quoting Leviticus 19:33-34, which calls for the respect of foreigners as one would have for those who are native-born. The teen said a close family member was deported a few years ago, and she believes ICE officers are wrongfully targeting those of Latino descent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince ICE came to Texas, people are way more scared,\u201d Abagail said. \u201cIt\u2019s disgusting what they do because it\u2019s not about criminals. It is pure racism. What they\u2019re doing, it is pure hatred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mansfield ISD officials released a statement to parents and staff stating that although they value students\u2019 voices and how they choose to express them, they plan to follow the state\u2019s guidelines.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The district\u2019s statement noted that students who choose to walk out and are marked for an unexcused absence are at risk of losing eligibility for extracurricular activities in athletics and fine arts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Abagail said she admired her peers who risked getting in trouble for protesting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis matters more to me than just school because it is much more,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The students walked down East Broad Street, holding small pink megaphones and chanting in unison. As they walked, cars honked and waved in encouragement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Estrella, a senior at Mansfield High, said she is using her voice for other students and family members who may be too scared to speak out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of my friends are scared for their families and parents getting taken,\u201d Estrella said. \u201cIf someone\u2019s scared to talk about it, then I have to speak up for them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chris Moss is a reporter for the Arlington Report.
