The Travis County Medical Examiner has determined Texas A&M student Brianna Aguilera died by suicide after falling from an\u00a0Austin high-rise\u00a0in November, a ruling that aligns with police findings but is being forcefully challenged <\/a>by the teen\u2019s family, whose attorney called the conclusion \u201cflawed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAustin Police (APD) is aware that the Travis County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office has concluded its final autopsy report regarding the death of Brianna Aguilera and ruled it a suicide,\u201d authorities wrote in a statement to affiliate\u00a0FOX 7 Austin<\/a>. \u201cThe investigation remains open, and until it is closed, Austin Police will not be providing any additional information.\u201d<\/p>\n

Attorneys representing Aguilera\u2019s family previously claimed she was killed despite the discovery of an\u00a0alleged suicide note\u00a0and suicidal texts to her friends on the night of her death.<\/a><\/p>\n

After the release of the medical examiner\u2019s findings, Tony Buzbee, the\u00a0attorney for Aguilera\u2019s family,<\/a> issued a statement criticizing the investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince Brianna Aguilera tragically lost her life, there has been an overwhelming amount of love and support for Brianna and her family. There has also been an overwhelming amount of criticism concerning the authorities for their handling of the investigation surrounding her death,\u201d Buzbee wrote in the statement, obtained by FOX 7.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSpecifically, the\u00a0Austin Police Department, without a legitimate investigation, quickly concluded that Brianna\u2019s death was a suicide.<\/a> This effort was far from what\u2019s expected of law enforcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an example, the Austin Police Department and those involved in the investigation failed to review phone records of Brianna and those immediately connected to her or those at the scene,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey failed to interview all witnesses, failed to take statements under oath, failed to put together an accurate timeline,\u00a0failed to secure video footage,\u00a0and, most importantly, failed to follow through and interview witnesses, even the ones that we identified for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buzbee described the medical examiner\u2019s ruling as \u201cexpected,\u201d alleging the finding was \u201cmade in large part based on the shoddy work of the Austin Police Department.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be clear. The Austin Police Department\u2019s \u2018investigation\u2019 fell woefully short,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBrianna deserved better. Her family deserves better.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Buzbee Law Firm\u00a0filed a lawsuit\u00a0Jan. 5<\/a> related to Aguilera\u2019s death.<\/p>\n
