The Harris County Appraisal District will send out appraisal notices late March and into early April. The appraisal notice shows what the district believes your home could sell for as of January 1 of the tax year.<\/p>\n
Economist Hank Lewis urges homeowners to pay attention to the value appraised. \u201cIf the value of your property goes up that same percentage of a higher value is a bigger value and it\u2019s a lot.\u201d Lewis said.<\/p>\n
For homeowners who have rolled their property tax into their monthly payment- they too could see an increased monthly house note. <\/p>\n
County officials urge homeowners who plan to appeal to focus on the appraised value of the home and not the value of the property tax owed. <\/p>\n
Lewis says it\u2019s important to look at market value of homes in the same area, take photos, and get repair estimates. \u201cThe appraisal district will factor in the cost of those repairs into downgrading the property value, if they\u2019re going to consider your appeal or not.\u201d He said. <\/p>\n
County officials urge homeowners to use HCAD\u2019s online web portal to send documentation electronically. An appraiser reviews the information and may send back a settlement offer.<\/p>\n
Lewis says to beware of companies sending letters promising to save you money on your property taxes. <\/p>\n
\u201cOne of those deals where it is like yes, they\u2019re going to give you some help, but you\u2019re going to pay through the nose for it. It may be one of those cases, where with help like this- who needs enemies?\u201d Lewis said. <\/p>\n
