Daniel Donato<\/a> knows how to grind.\u00a0\u00a0Starting out as a young man busking in Nashville\u2019s busy Lower Broadway as a teenager, Donato\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0stopped yet. He and his Cosmic Country band will perform in Houston on Wednesday, February 18 at The Heights Theater<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been doing this since I was 14 and I\u2019m 30 now so this will be my seventeenth year in this business so it\u2019s been a lot of things but one word that describes it all is, it\u2019s just been very authentic,\u201d says Donato.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems like in some universal sense\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been given an opportunity to never skip any\u00a0single\u00a0 steps\u00a0in my career.\u00a0So\u00a0every single rung of the ladder that is possible,\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0done it.\u00a0Obviously\u00a0there\u2019s ones above me that I have not hit yet, but\u00a0every one\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0gotten me to where I am\u00a0today\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0not skipped a single step.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Donato\u2019s love for the guitar came from playing\u00a0GuitarWizard.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to transition from a video game to playing an instrument and writing music and I can still do that. I still have that cosmic power and we all do.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

It seems to have been that same cosmic energy that led him to the famous Robert\u2019s Western World <\/a>where he saw Nashville staple Don Kelley Band on stage.\u00a0\u00a0The Don Kelley Band served as the house band for the old honky\u00a0tonk\u00a0playing nightly sets for 25 years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard this music and heard it presented in that\u00a0way\u00a0it was\u00a0kinda\u00a0like one of the three revelations that I\u2019ve had in my life and I was just obsessed with it,\u201d says Donato.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was obsessed with it in the same way that I was obsessed with Led Zeppelin when I first heard them. It was total fandom.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, he ended up joining the band. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe way that you play country music down at Roberts, it\u2019s\u00a0very traditional and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0very honky\u00a0tonk.\u00a0That way of playing is a very\u00a0blue collar working class\u00a0approach to music.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the past 20 years it\u2019s been the best honky\u00a0tonk\u00a0in Music City, which probably makes it the number one honky\u00a0tonk\u00a0on the planet in my opinion,\u201d says Donato.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whereas Willie Nelson\u00a0essentially had\u00a0to leave Nashville and return to Texas to create the Cosmic Cowboy genre, joining hippies and rednecks, Donato found his way and sonic path through constant touring.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Donato\u2019s band features\u00a0Nathan \u201cSugarlegg\u201d Aronowitz on keys and guitar, Will \u201cMustang\u201d McGee on bass and Will \u201cBronco\u201d Clark on drums.\u00a0\u00a0Among the four of them the chemistry and connection to the music is palpable through their playing and harmonizing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Donato describes the\u00a0four of them as \u201cA high wire\u00a0act.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not as big of a band as Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys but we make just as much noise.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Donato and his Cosmic Country bandmates share a sensibility not only for classic country but also a penchant for jamming in a way reminiscent of the Grateful Dead.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI started getting into them and I would listen to how they would stretch out these country songs and how they\u2019d approach these country songs because Jerry Garcia is an amazing singer but he\u2019s also a very different singer than Merle Haggard so when he sings or when Bob would sing \u201cMama Tried\u201d there\u2019s a different essence to it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Donato\u2019s latest album Horizons showcases\u00a0the band\u2019s range as they walk the line among groovy bass lines, spacey guitar\u00a0licks\u00a0and twangy\u00a0well written\u00a0songs. Donato credits their more than 300 shows between their\u00a0previous\u00a0album Reflector and Horizons with the band\u2019s sound.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s\u00a0a ton of experience,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0just so much experience that you\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0even really be fully empathetic and sensitive to it all. I can hear and feel that\u00a0difference\u00a0and I think\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a very beautiful\u00a0evolution.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0probably more\u00a0subtle to people that are new into Cosmic Country.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Donato compares the growth to viewing a yearbook photo between years and seeing the subtle changes in a person\u2019s expressions attributed to\u00a0all of\u00a0their contrasting experiences in their lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more that we embrace the experience of our lives and respect it and try to see what it\u2019s teaching us and therefore you can create your life from a more honest place or a more high frequency place I call it. Horizons is in short, it\u2019s very much a record of faith.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0really about\u00a0embracing this cosmic responsibility that we believe more than we know.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Listening to Donato\u2019s songs convey his vision of Cosmic Country and the higher meaning behind it all, a driving force in his art and language. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0think most people see cosmic country for first time and rightfully they think\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a combination of country and a psychedelic and improvisational approach, there is that but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not where it begins and\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0also not where it ends. It\u2019s definitely a spiritual statement.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
