{"id":167583,"date":"2026-02-17T03:04:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T03:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/167583\/"},"modified":"2026-02-17T03:04:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T03:04:14","slug":"anti-ice-enforcement-walkout-sparks-student-safety-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/167583\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-ICE Enforcement Walkout Sparks Student Safety Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Anti-ICE Enforcement walkout at Arlington Heights High School sparked safety concerns after a student was pictured protesting on top of an I-30 pedestrian bridge.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"976\">Students at Arlington Heights High School <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/fwisdwatchdog\/posts\/student-walkouts-are-the-talk-of-texas-greg-abbott-cited-failing-schools-and-ind\/1231644212407246\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walked<\/a> out on February 13 to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). A new photo obtained by The Dallas Express shows one student walking on a safety wire atop a pedestrian bridge spanning I-30.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dallasexpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-16-at-5.09.47-PM.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-301264\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-16-at-5.09.47-PM-515x675.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"675\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, other photos obtained by DX show students standing on the I-30 frontage roads, without sidewalks, holding Mexican flags and protest signs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dallasexpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-16-at-5.10.44-PM.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-301268\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Screenshot-2026-02-16-at-5.10.44-PM-515x651.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"651\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very clear by the pictures that surfaced that the district is not doing a good job of keeping students safe, when that\u2019s happening right outside the school,\u201d State Board of Education Member Brandon Hall told The Dallas Express.<\/p>\n<p>FWISD Superintendent Karen Molinar sent a message to parents, obtained by The Dallas Express, stating that the district \u201crespects students\u2019 rights to express their views in appropriate ways\u201d and that students are expected to remain in class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen walkouts occur, FWISD campuses follow established safety, attendance, and supervision procedures to account for students and to ensure that instruction continues for those who remain,\u201d she wrote. \u201cWhen students leave school grounds for a non-district sponsored event, the district is unable to supervise or account for them, which raises student safety concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Molinar said the district is committed to safe schools, \u201cuninterrupted instruction,\u201d and a calm learning environment.<\/p>\n<p>She pledged to comply with Texas Education Agency (TEA) guidance and mark walkout participants with unexcused absences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot following this guidance could affect attendance funding and may prompt further review by the state,\u201d Molinar wrote. \u201cEducators are prohibited from encouraging or facilitating student participation in political activity during the school day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The TEA officially took control of FWISD in September 2025, as previously reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasexpress.com\/tarrant\/fear-of-the-unknown-teachers-react-to-texas-education-agency-takeover-of-fort-worth-isd\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Dallas Express<\/a>. At the time, TEA Commissioner Mike Morath cited state law requiring a takeover when a campus receives failing ratings for five consecutive years.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2025, the TEA appointed a <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasexpress.com\/education\/tea-appoints-conservator-to-oversee-fort-worth-isd-takeover\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conservator<\/a> to oversee the FWISD transition. The agency is expected to appoint a new board in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing that they\u2019re using kids for their political agenda and putting them at risk during the school day, I think it can\u2019t come soon enough,\u201d Hall told DX.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3087\" data-end=\"3323\">Gov. Greg Abbott has publicly warned districts to enforce the law against protests during school hours, as previously reported by The Dallas Express. He suggested school officials could be liable for any injuries during such protests.<\/p>\n<p>In early February, the State Board of Education also requested an <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasexpress.com\/education\/texas-escalates-response-to-student-ice-walkouts-as-sboe-urges-educator-investigations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">investigation<\/a> into whether school officials were supporting activism.<\/p>\n<p>The Instagram profile that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/fwisdwatchdog\/posts\/student-walkouts-are-the-talk-of-texas-greg-abbott-cited-failing-schools-and-ind\/1231644212407246\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">promoted<\/a> the walkout \u2013 \u201cHeights Impact\u201d \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/heightsimpact\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">links<\/a> to a Change.org petition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/fwisd-protect-students-from-ice-raids-protegiendo-a-los-estudiantes-de-ice?utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=mobileNativeShare&amp;utm_campaign=share_petition&amp;recruited_by_id=1cd580d0-017d-11f1-a41e-b9f2590a8a64\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">demanding<\/a> FWISD oppose ICE on campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A local <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdzkjO8LlUSjv2h3pAvX7Uz52Uxie0noOuNmjhXCx0jPjYOZw\/viewform?pli=1&amp;fbzx=-1575226302506022402\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chapter<\/a> of the national group Indivisible backs the petition. As previously reported by The Dallas Express, the group <a href=\"https:\/\/indivisible.org\/statements\/indivisible-and-partners-announce-no-kings-nationwide-day-defiance-flag-day-during\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">staged<\/a> \u201cNo Kings\u201d protests across America in June 2025. Indivisible has received <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasexpress.com\/tarrant\/dfw-preps-for-more-anti-trump-protests\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">funding<\/a> from George Soros\u2019 Open Society Foundations.<\/p>\n<p>Locally, Indivisible often <a href=\"https:\/\/dallasexpress.com\/metroplex\/indivisibles-agenda-where-protests-attempt-to-trump-principles-in-grapevine-colleyvilles-school-board-showdown\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">intervenes<\/a> in elections for offices like the school board.
