HOUSTON \u2013 An action-packed night at Houston\u2019s NRG Stadium took an unexpected turn during Saturday\u2019s Monster Jam event when rain began dripping \u2014 then pouring \u2014 inside the stadium despite the roof being closed.<\/p>\n
KPRC 2 News reporter Corley Peel spoke with stadium officials about the ongoing repairs and what fans can expect moving forward.<\/p>\n
Crews are racing against the clock as NRG prepares for several major upcoming events, including the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in early March and seven FIFA World Cup matches this summer.<\/p>\n
Video shared by community news partner Grizzy\u2019s Hood News captured rain pouring through the roof during the event, with attendees opening umbrellas indoors to stay dry.<\/p>\n
Monday, repair crews were spotted on top of the stadium\u2019s retractable roof, working to fix the damage caused by a fast-moving storm that brought wind gusts near 50 miles per hour and intense rainfall in a short period.<\/p>\n
While the stadium remains structurally sound, officials acknowledge the building isn\u2019t fully sealed at the moment due to ongoing major roof renovations that have been underway for months.<\/p>\n
The retractable roof, which rises 292 feet above the field, is covered in a specialized fabric membrane system rather than traditional roofing materials. Crews are working section by section to complete the repairs.<\/p>\n
Temporary exposure during the storm made the venue more vulnerable to leaks, and crews are currently assessing whether the storm has delayed the project or increased costs.<\/p>\n
Despite the setback, officials say the repair work is still on schedule to ensure the roof is ready for the busy event season ahead.<\/p>\n
