A local expert blames one thing: the economy."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe State Fair is a Texas tradition, but when reality hits, traditions die,\u201d  said Steven Haynes, an assistant professor at UT Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>DALLAS \u2014 Fewer people went to the State Fair of Texas in 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/state-fair\/state-fair-of-texas-attendence-numbers-2-million-visitors\/287-3edfb895-684d-402a-8269-c2dd0e9a1674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">than at any point in the last decade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 2,020,064 people attended during the three-week event. That\u2019s down from more than 2.3 million in 2023 and 2024. The fair hit its peak in 2022 with more than 2.5 million visitors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/state-fair\/state-fair-of-texas-attendence-numbers-2-million-visitors\/287-3edfb895-684d-402a-8269-c2dd0e9a1674\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Fair organizers blame a mix of things<\/a>: \u00a0unfounded fears over potential immigration raids at Fair Park, hotter-than-normal temperatures, global uncertainty, the government shutdown and economic pressures on fairgoers.<\/p>\n<p>But Steven Haynes, assistant professor of practice, finance and managerial economics at The University of Texas at Dallas&#8217;s Naveen Jindal School of Management, says it\u2019s most likely just one of those things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a lack of interest. It\u2019s a lack of disposable income,\u201d Haynes told WFAA. \u201cPeople are at their breaking point when it comes to their wallets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haynes says families usually dedicate 10 to 15 percent of their income to discretionary spending on \u201cgood times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s really being squeezed right now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He calls it \u201cfunflation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Texans are forced to choose between going to the fair or putting groceries on their plate for a week, they&#8217;re going to pick groceries, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Dallas City Manager Ted Benavides is now a professor of practice in the public and nonprofit management program in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at UT Dallas. He told WFAA he thinks the city should and will study what happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure there are going to be discussions about, can we change the mix of entertainment, or maybe, do we need to do surveys, some focus groups, talk with vendors?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also wonders if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/article\/news\/local\/state-fair\/viral-posts-spark-debate-over-state-fair-of-texas-attendance-costs\/287-4994d76c-ddb1-45af-9f93-61ebab6ec5e0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">social media posts about smaller crowds<\/a> early in the fair&#8217;s run might have become a self-fulfilling prophecy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s a lot of academic data that says that the bigger the crowd, the more you want to be there,\u201d he said. \u201cThe density, the tightness of it attracts people. And I think the fear of missing out is also a factor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haynes isn\u2019t surprised by the drop, and he thinks it might be a harbinger of what\u2019s to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we get into Black Friday next month, I\u2019m predicting we\u2019re going to have a bad year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dallas has been comfortably shielded from some of the worst downturns in recent memory because of a diverse economy with a heavy tie to the financial sector.
