Greg Casar presented the check to post leaders Tuesday afternoon in downtown San Antonio, calling it a first step toward long-needed repairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOur veterans deserve no more rot and no more rust, and we\u2019re going to get these renovations done,\u201d Casar said. \u201cI\u2019m happy these $2 million will be a first step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Post Commander Monica Morris said the historic building has faced significant challenges in recent years, including flooding, burst pipes during the 2021 winter storm and repeated vandalism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis building has endured not just damage from weather and flooding and broken pipes during the winter of 2021 but a lot of vandalism,\u201d Morris said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In December, burglars broke into the property, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/12\/15\/were-devastated-thousands-of-dollars-stolen-during-break-in-at-historic-vfw-post-76-downtown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">causing thousands of dollars in damage just days before Christmas<\/a>. Morris said leaders had worried about whether the post could continue operating amid mounting repair costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe have thought about that, and we were running low until just recently,\u201d she said when asked whether closure had been considered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The funding, which Casar helped secure in the federal budget, will address structural and infrastructure needs. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Morris said the first phase will focus on repairing the veranda, with work expected to begin next month. Plans also include foundation repairs in the basement and electrical and plumbing upgrades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019re fixing the foundation in the basement,\u201d Morris said. \u201cWe have to modernize the electrical and plumbing, but our first project is the veranda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Founded more than a century ago, VFW Post 76 has long served as a gathering place for veterans in San Antonio. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Morris said preserving the building ensures the organization can continue its mission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOur mission is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans,\u201d Morris said. \u201cWe aim to honor the dead by helping the living. We ensure every veteran is respected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Local and state leaders joined Casar in supporting the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">State Sen.
