{"id":169662,"date":"2026-02-18T12:27:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T12:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/169662\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T12:27:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T12:27:11","slug":"national-dems-target-pair-of-state-legislative-races-in-san-antonio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/169662\/","title":{"rendered":"National Dems target pair of state legislative races in San Antonio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After Texas green-lit President Donald Trump\u2019s plans to redraw its congressional districts last year, national Democrats trying to win back power in Washington D.C. are preparing to spend big against the Republican state lawmakers who were responsible.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which seeks to elect Democratic majorities in state legislatures across the country, added Texas to its list of spending targets, with roughly $50 million to spend in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>While flipping Republicans\u2019 26-seat majority in the Texas House is likely out of the question this election cycle, Democrats are targeting five GOP-held seats with money and resources this year, including two in the San Antonio area. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/121\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas House District 121<\/a> stretches north from Alamo Heights to Bulverde, where Republican state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/marc-lahood-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-121\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Marc LaHood<\/a> (R-San Antonio) is seeking a second term and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/marc-lahood-primary-david-mcarthur-hd121-gop-primary-spending\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/marc-lahood-primary-david-mcarthur-hd121-gop-primary-spending\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">faces an expensive primary<\/a> in his first reelection race. The winner will face <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/zack-dunn-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-121\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Zack Dunn<\/a>, a prosecutor in the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s office.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/districts\/tx-house\/118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas House District 118<\/a>, which cups San Antonio\u2019s South Side, Republicans are trying the hold the seat state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/john-lujan-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">John Lujan<\/a> (R-San Antonio) left to run for Congress. They also have a competitive primary, and the winner will face Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/kristian-carranza-2026-candidate-for-texas-house-district-118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kristian Carranza<\/a>, a longtime political strategist who ran against Lujan in 2024 and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-house-district-118-john-lujan-kristian-carranza-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raised more money<\/a> than any first-time state House candidate in Texas history.<\/p>\n<p>The DLCC is working with the campaign arm of the Texas House\u2019s Democratic caucus, which on its own doesn\u2019t have much money to spend, but will now set the spending priorities for a budget buoyed by national money.<\/p>\n<p>On a call with reporters Tuesday, state Rep. Christina Morales (D-Houston), who chairs the Texas House Democratic Campaign Committee, said the DLCC hasn\u2019t committed a specific dollar amount to Texas races, but noted that the urgency to flip seats in the Texas Legislature has risen as a priority the more that body\u2019s work impacts national politics.<\/p>\n<p>By the numbers<\/p>\n<p>Republicans currently control the White House, U.S. Senate and U.S. House in Washington D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Of those, Democrats\u2019 best chance of slowing down the GOP agenda in 2026 is flipping the U.S. House, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/15\/politics\/house-control-districts-vis\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/15\/politics\/house-control-districts-vis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">they only need to net three or four seats<\/a> in a midterm where the party out of power typically picks up an average of 25 to 30 seats.<\/p>\n<p>But Democrats already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/interactives\/2025\/democrats-2026-midterm-flips-redistricting-data\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/interactives\/2025\/democrats-2026-midterm-flips-redistricting-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">faced a much smaller number of potential targets<\/a> nationwide in 2026, thanks to the redistricting overseen by Republican-led legislatures since the 2020 Census.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/DemocraticTownHall_District116_WoodlawnPointeCommunityCenter_05_02.12.2026_AmberEsparza.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5431049\"  \/>Zack Dunn, a prosecutor in the Family Violence Division at the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s office, campaigns and speaks with guests at a Democratic Town Hall hosted by Trey Martinez Fischer at the Woodlawn Pointe Community Center on Feb. 12, 2026. Credit: Amber Esparza \/ San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>Last year the Texas legislature widened that gap further by engaging in an unusual mid-cycle redistricting effort that turned five Democrat-held seats into GOP pickup opportunities \u2014 in a state where Republicans already control 25 out of 38 seats.<\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"https:\/\/thetexastribune.beehiiv.com\/p\/the-blast-mon-feb-16-2026#redistricting\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/thetexastribune.beehiiv.com\/p\/the-blast-mon-feb-16-2026#redistricting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">state lawmakers are talking about<\/a> another potential round of redistricting in the 2027 session, shoring up their majorities in the chambers responsible for drawing the maps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think about the congressional seats, but what are they going to do to our seats in the state House and in the Senate?\u201d Morales said. \u201cThe [Texas] House controls those district lines. \u2026 Everybody should be concerned about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s press call came as Texas Democrats were unveiling plans for a $30 million coordinated campaign to help all of their federal, state and local campaigns in 2026, during which the party is targeting the governor\u2019s office, a U.S. Senate seat, and many more offices up and down the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>On that call, the executive director of the largest super PAC helping Democrats in Texas chimed in to say that House District 118 would be a major battleground for all the Democratic groups spending in Texas this year, in part because of the role it plays in statewide politics.<\/p>\n<p>The district was a democratic stronghold where Republicans spent big to help Lujan flip red in 2022 and hold onto in 2024.
