{"id":170436,"date":"2026-02-18T23:18:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T23:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/170436\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T23:18:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T23:18:07","slug":"lcra-could-build-a-new-lake-in-colorado-county-southeast-of-austin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/170436\/","title":{"rendered":"LCRA could build a new lake in Colorado County, southeast of Austin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img alt=\"The Lower Colorado River Authority will consider building a new lake in Colorado County, agency officials announced Wednesday.\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:4 \/ 3\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Lower Colorado River Authority will consider building a new lake in Colorado County, agency officials announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Driggars\/Austin American-Statesman<\/p>\n<p>The Lower Colorado River Authority will consider building a new lake in Colorado County, about 110 miles southeast of Austin, agency officials announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>LCRA General Manager Phil Wilson said during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/local\/article\/central-texas-lcra-water-plan-update-21352462.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a Wednesday meeting<\/a>\u00a0the authority is \u201cquickly moving forward\u201d with a study to determine if it\u2019s feasible to build a large new reservoir on land it already owns in\u00a0the rural, southeast Texas county.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The lake would be located on a 2,000-acre site just northwest of Eagle Lake and could potentially store between 48,000 and 80,000 acre-feet of water, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/lcra.org\/news\/news-releases\/lcra-exploring-new-reservoir-to-meet-water-demand\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the authority said<\/a>, noting that a new reservoir could help it meet its future supply needs.\u00a0LCRA manages the lower 600 miles of the Colorado River and provides water\u00a0to dozens of municipalities through a system of reservoirs, including the Highland Lakes.<\/p>\n<p>Details about the potential project, including timeline and cost, are not yet known while the LCRA determines if the site could support the lake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too early to know specifics, because we first need to do our due diligence,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cWe need to know how the site could best be used for off-channel storage and the technical, environmental and permitting constraints. Once we have that information, we\u2019ll estimate the cost, look at funding options and develop a timetable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A map shows the proposed location of a potential new LCRA reservoir in Colorado County.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:4 \/ 3\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A map shows the proposed location of a potential new LCRA reservoir in Colorado County.<\/p>\n<p>Lower Colorado River Authority<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes just months after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcra.org\/news\/news-releases\/arbuckle-reservoir-now-operational\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the authority\u2019s newest reservoir came online<\/a>.\u00a0Arbuckle Reservoir in Wharton County became operational last October, marking the first time\u00a0LCRA has added a large lake to its system since the Highland Lakes came online in the 1950s. It holds up to 40,000 acre-feet. One acre-foot is the amount needed to cover one acre with a foot of water, or about 325,851 gallons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Local officials in the Lower Basin welcomed the announcement and the additional water supply it could bring to the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore storage to ultimately make more water available for the various needs we all have is a good thing,\u201d Colorado County Judge Ty Prause said in a statement. Wharton County Judge Phillip Spenrath, co-chairman of the Lower Colorado River Basin Coalition, also praised the move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would increase water storage downstream for the growing needs of businesses and communities downstream of Austin,\u201d Spenrath said. \u201cCompetition for water is increasing throughout the basin, and while we appreciate\u00a0LCRA\u2019s strong science-based, stakeholder approach to its Water Management Plan, additional water in the lower basin\u00a0\u2014 where rainfall is more plentiful\u00a0\u2014 is the best answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>According to the Texas Almanac, Colorado County receives\u00a0about 41 inches of rainfall per year; That compares to 32 inches in Travis County.<\/p>\n<p>LCRA board approves updates to Water Management Plan<\/p>\n<p>Also on Wednesday, a split LCRA Board of Directors advanced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/local\/article\/central-texas-lcra-water-plan-update-21352462.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an update to the authority\u2019s Water Management Plan<\/a>, which dictates how water from Lakes Travis and Buchanan is divided between city water utilities like Austin Water and coastal rice farmers downstream. The 15-member board approved the plan with two members dissenting, saying the updates were too restrictive for agricultural users.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I understand the increased demand up here [in Austin],&#8221; said dissenting board member Tom Kelley, a rice farmer and cattleman in Colorado County. &#8220;I understand also that the only place that y&#8217;all have to take water from is interruptible, and that&#8217;s us. I get it, but I don&#8217;t like it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Changes to the plan, which was last updated in 2020, include a reduction of the amount of water LCRA can release for irrigation and an increase in the lake-level thresholds that trigger a cutoff to farmers.<\/p>\n<p>The updates come after months of negotiation between farmers and other Highland Lakes stakeholders.
