HOUSTON \u2013 Another historic Houston theater is at risk of disappearing, as demolition plans loom for the Garden Oaks Theater, a landmark known for its distinctive Art Deco style on Shepherd Drive.<\/p>\n
The theater, which opened in 1947, has long been a recognizable fixture in the Garden Oaks community. Most recently used as a church, the property was sold in a private deal for approximately $7.1 million, according to local preservationist Maureen McNamara.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe minister told me that the sale was to an investor who works with shopping center developers,\u201d McNamara said.<\/p>\n

Despite efforts by a spirited group of protesters and an online petition to save the theater, the Garden Oaks Theater lacks any formal historic designation, leaving it vulnerable to demolition under current laws.<\/p>\n
McNamara had envisioned transforming the old theater into a community art space and remains hopeful. \u201cThe owner has said that he would be willing to talk to some community leaders. So we\u2019re trying to find that opening in the door,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
