SAN ANTONIO \u2013 After two and a half years, one San Antonio woman said she can finally leave her house on her own. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m very happy,\u201d Mary Lou Aguirre said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m very, very lucky.\u201d <\/p>\n
Aguirre uses a wheelchair. In January, KSAT shared her concern<\/a>s<\/a> about city construction on Capitol Avenue blocking the gate to her property. The city\u2019s Public Works Department quickly worked to find her a solution. <\/p>\n In that story<\/a>, KSAT also shared her need for wheelchair-accessible ramps to leave her house on her own. She said in the days after that story was published<\/a>, San Antonio\u2019s Neighborhood and Housing Services Department reached out to her to help. <\/p>\n \u201cI could not leave my house,\u201d Aguirre said. \u201cIn case of a fire, and just in case of anything that I needed to get out for, I couldn\u2019t.\u201d <\/p>\n On Wednesday, Aguirre said the city teamed up with the Texas Ramp Project<\/a> to build her two new ramps. She said the supplies were donated by Home Depot. <\/p>\n Just hours after the project was finished, she couldn\u2019t stop smiling. <\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s a very exciting day,\u201d Aguirre said.<\/p>\n If you find yourself in a similar situation, try calling 311<\/a>.
