{"id":172226,"date":"2026-02-20T01:22:34","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T01:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/172226\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T01:22:34","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T01:22:34","slug":"expert-shares-critical-steps-to-stay-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/172226\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert shares critical steps to stay safe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">HOUSTON \u2013 Stalking is one of the strongest warning signs that violence could escalate \u2014 and experts say knowing what steps to take early can make a difference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Heather Bellino, CEO of Texas Advocacy Project and a recent member of Texas Governor Greg Abbott\u2019s Family Violence Criminal Homicide Prevention Task Force, says stalking is often misunderstood and underestimated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019ve done this with the other colleagues on this task force just as recently as Tuesday,\u201d Bellino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She says stalking is not always a stranger lurking in the dark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201c40% of the time, stalking and homicide. Happens in an intimate partner violence relationship,\u201d Bellino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Because stalking is often pattern-based rather than a single dramatic incident, it can be difficult to recognize and prove.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAnd I think one of the biggest problems with that is that we are used to incident-based criminal activity. This is pattern-based criminal activity,\u201d Bellino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">If you believe you are being stalked, Bellino says there are important steps to take.<\/p>\n<p>1. Take your own concerns seriously<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One of the most important things, she says, is trusting your instincts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cLet\u2019s be honest, the general population in society, and the victims themselves, need to understand that when their gut is telling them something is off and wrong, they really need to listen to that,\u201d Bellino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Stalking behaviors can seem minor when viewed individually \u2014 repeated texts, unwanted gifts, someone showing up unexpectedly \u2014 but even though behaviors might seem innocuous, Bellino said the patterns matter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhy are they afraid? What is it that\u2019s happening? What is the context around? Maybe it\u2019s too many text messages or a light being left on. Those things from the perspective of the victim tell a total story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2. Contact law enforcement<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bellino says reaching out to police is critical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIf somebody is being harmed and they believe that they are being stalked, absolutely, reaching out to law enforcement is critical. They must do it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She acknowledges response quality can vary, and victims may have to clearly explain the full pattern of behavior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cBut let\u2019s not always put the onus on the victim,\u201d Bellino said. \u201cLet\u2019s make sure that law enforcement in this beautiful, great state of Texas has the resources and has had the training to really tease that out when they come into an incident-based event to say, \u2018Why did this make you afraid?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. Document everything<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Documentation can be key to securing legal protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIn the sense of being able to maybe get a conviction or get a legal remedy on the civil legal side, perhaps a protective order, the more you can document, the better,\u201d Bellino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She recommends:<\/p>\n<p>Screenshotting messages<\/p>\n<p>Saving voicemails<\/p>\n<p>Taking photos<\/p>\n<p>Backing up digital evidence<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhenever possible, if you can screenshot things, if you can take pictures, we definitely need to have that supportive evidence,\u201d she said. \u201cAgain, stalking might not look threatening to somebody who doesn\u2019t have the context of what\u2019s occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>4. Be cautious on social media<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Online platforms can unintentionally provide information to a stalker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cSocial media and our access to each other absolutely creates additional barriers,\u201d Bellino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She warns that even photos can reveal more than people realize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere are apps out there that if you take a picture with this background, it could tell you exactly where I am,\u201d Bellino said. \u201cIt might just be an ocean behind me, but that ocean is identifiable and there is amount of data behind those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Rather than immediately deleting social media accounts, she encourages victims to work with an advocate to develop a personalized safety plan.<\/p>\n<p>5. Know your legal options<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Protective orders and other civil remedies may be available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIf you are being stalked, there are civil legal remedies that can help you, like protective orders,\u201d Bellino said. \u201cIt\u2019s very important that you at least understand what your rights are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bellino says the most important takeaway is recognizing stalking as a serious and potentially escalating threat \u2014 and acting early before it becomes something worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She recommends calling the Texas Advocacy Project if you believe that you might be a victim of stalking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe are here to help you out,\u201d she said. \u201cOur attorneys are waiting.
