{"id":173187,"date":"2026-02-20T18:16:30","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T18:16:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/173187\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T18:16:30","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T18:16:30","slug":"eastbound-i-10-mainlanes-to-close-overnight-this-weekend-for-houston-avenue-bridge-repairs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/173187\/","title":{"rendered":"Eastbound I-10 mainlanes to close overnight this weekend for Houston Avenue bridge repairs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">HOUSTON \u2013 Drivers heading east on Interstate 10 near downtown Houston should prepare for a major closure this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, crews will shut down the eastbound mainlanes of Interstate 10 from Shepherd Drive to Houston Avenue for bridge repairs, according to Texas Department of Transportation officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The closure will remain in place continuously through 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The impacted stretch runs from Shepherd Drive\/Durham Drive to Houston Avenue. All eastbound mainlanes in that area will be closed.<\/p>\n<p>Detour details<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Drivers will be detoured using the following route:<\/p>\n<p>Exit to the I-10 eastbound frontage road<\/p>\n<p>Turn left on Shepherd Drive<\/p>\n<p>Turn left onto the I-10 westbound frontage road<\/p>\n<p>Continue to the next westbound entrance ramp<\/p>\n<p>Take the I-10 westbound mainlanes to the 610 West Loop northbound<\/p>\n<p>Continue to the 610 North Loop eastbound<\/p>\n<p>Take I-45 southbound<\/p>\n<p>Reconnect with I-10 eastbound<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Starting tonight 9pm through 5am Mon. Feb. 23, crews will close the eastbound mainlanes of I-10 from Shepherd Dr to Houston Ave for bridge repairs. Visit Houston TranStar for closure details &amp; detours. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Y8nY7esiLn\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/Y8nY7esiLn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TxDOT- HOU District (@TxDOTHouston) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TxDOTHouston\/status\/2024883084965900548?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">February 20, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, especially during peak weekend traffic hours. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Officials are reminding drivers to slow down in work zones and watch for crews and signage.<\/p>\n<p>Houston Avenue bridge strikes<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Last year, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) released data showing that the bridge had been hit 72 times in 2025 alone, racking up hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and forcing repeated freeway closures that disrupt traffic and cost taxpayers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Standing just 14 feet, 3 inches high, the bridge requires any taller truck to have a special permit to pass underneath. But TxDOT says many of the truckers responsible for these crashes were either hauling oversized loads without permits or ignoring designated routes to take shortcuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">To help prevent strikes, TxDOT has installed three oversized-load detection systems that flash warnings to approaching drivers. Still, officials say not every trucker listens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">While the bridge remains structurally sound, it fails in one critical area, clearance.
