{"id":173649,"date":"2026-02-21T00:56:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T00:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/173649\/"},"modified":"2026-02-21T00:56:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T00:56:10","slug":"san-antonio-area-congressional-primaries-get-push-from-pacs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/173649\/","title":{"rendered":"San Antonio-area Congressional primaries get push from PACs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Texas primary election got a late start this year, while the courts were still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/11\/21\/texas-redistricting-supreme-court-temporary-stay\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/11\/21\/texas-redistricting-supreme-court-temporary-stay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">deciding whether to allow the GOP\u2019s new congressional maps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now party leaders and PACs are swooping in at the last minute to boost candidates who lack the time and resources needed to find voters shuffled around by redistricting, according to campaign finance reports due Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Roughly 43% of Bexar County voters are now in a different congressional district than the last time they voted, according to the county elections department.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the latest numbers released\u00a0indicated\u00a0that few campaigns had brought in the type of money needed to introduce themselves in the six weeks leading up to early voting.<\/p>\n<p>One exception is the heated GOP primary rematch in Texas 23rd Congressional District, where U.S. Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/tony-gonzales-2026-candidate-for-texas-23rd-congressional-district\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/tony-gonzales-2026-candidate-for-texas-23rd-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tony Gonzales<\/a> (R-San Antonio) and YouTube creator <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/brandon-herrera-2026-candidate-for-texas-23rd-congressional-district\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/brandon-herrera-2026-candidate-for-texas-23rd-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Brandon Herrera<\/a> spent a combined $1.9 million from their campaign accounts between Jan. 1 and Feb. 11. <\/p>\n<p>But in the two races without incumbents on the ballot, candidates are leaning on endorsements, personal money, grassroots organizing, and TV ads from outside groups to get their name out to voters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timeline has been truncated,\u201d San Antonio political strategist Bert Santiba\u00f1ez said of the adjustment to new congressional districts. \u201cYou have cut through the noise to make an introduction in some of these new districts\u2026 [but] just based on the timeline [this year], that accelerated spending probably has to be done by outside groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the newly created Texas\u2019 35th Congressional District, that means <a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/watch?v=Yt-KbBrRwls&amp;feature=youtu.be\" type=\"link\" id=\"youtube.com\/watch?v=Yt-KbBrRwls&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">TV ads linking<\/a> longtime sheriff\u2019s deputy <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/johnny-garcia-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Johnny Garcia<\/a> to his popular, well-known boss, Sheriff Javier Salazar.<\/p>\n<p>Bigger-name Democrats passed on an opening that was drawn to favor Republicans, and now the party is scrambling to shore up a first-time candidate whose campaign spent just $120,000 in the six weeks before early voting. <\/p>\n<p>A PAC aligned with the Congressional Blue Dog Caucus spent $300,000 on the anti-Garcia ads ahead of the four-way primary, in which one of the other Democrats accused them of turning politics into a \u201cchessboard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst it was against the GOP\u2019s gerrymandered maps that tried to dilute our community\u2019s voice. Now, we face a different kind of suppression,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/john-lira-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">John Lira<\/a> said in a statement. \u201cThe D.C. special interests [are] attempting to shape this race from the outside, and I\u2019m not going to stay quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Republicans are also leaning on bigger names to help their candidates in a crowded primary.<\/p>\n<p>Their biggest spender between Jan. 1 and Feb. 11. was retired U.S. Navy Commander <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/pdf\/540\/202602199834792540\/202602199834792540.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/pdf\/540\/202602199834792540\/202602199834792540.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jay Furman<\/a>, who ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo) in the 28th Congressional District in 2024, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/henry-cuellar-faces-jay-furman-texas-28th-congressional-district\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/henry-cuellar-faces-jay-furman-texas-28th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">has never been embraced<\/a> by the GOP leaders trying to hold a narrow U.S. House majority. <\/p>\n<p>Instead, they drew a GOP pickup opportunity for state Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/john-lujan-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/john-lujan-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">John Lujan<\/a> (R-San Antonio), who <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/pdf\/752\/202602199834771752\/202602199834771752.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/pdf\/752\/202602199834771752\/202602199834771752.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">spent just $70,000<\/a> in the six weeks leading up to early voting, and is now getting help from Gov. Greg Abbott for the toughest primary of his career.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Republican leaders in D.C. just threw their weight behind a different candidate in this race, who they hope can benefit from his family connections. <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/carlos-de-la-cruz-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/carlos-de-la-cruz-2026-candidate-for-texas-35th-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Carlos De La Cruz<\/a> spent just $105,000 between Jan. 1 and Feb. 11, but he\u2019s the brother of U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz (R-Edinburg), and is now President Donald Trump\u2019s choice in the race, too.<\/p>\n<p>Both Lujan and De La Cruz fell short of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/pdf\/540\/202602199834792540\/202602199834792540.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">$225,000 Furman spent in the<\/a>\u00a0six weeks leading up to early voting \u2014 money the later has spent on signs, advertising and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">internal polling showing him<\/a>\u00a0headed to a runoff with Lujan.<\/p>\n<p>In Texas\u2019 21st Congressional District, outside groups are now piling in to help former Major League Baseball player\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/mark-teixeira-2026-candidate-for-texas-21st-congressional-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mark Teixeira<\/a>, who is benefitting from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZSlPpBjnj44\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZSlPpBjnj44\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">TV ads run by<\/a> the D.C. conservative group Club for Growth.<\/p>\n<p>Teixeira faces no shortage of resources, having now put $2.75 million of his own money into the race. But GOP leaders are now <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/2026-primary-election-san-antonio-congressional-races\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/2026-primary-election-san-antonio-congressional-races\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">angling to wrap up messy primaries in the wake of a stunning special election loss<\/a>, and Teixeira is one of 12 Republicans seeking their party\u2019s nomination to replace U.S. Chip Roy (R-Dripping Springs).<\/p>\n<p>He has Trump\u2019s endorsement as the Club for Growth\u2019s TV ads point out three times.
