An ultra-modern home has been revamped from the ground up in San Antonio’s Lone Star Arts District, and it’s going for an asking price of just shy of $500,000.

Builder Marco Flores and his family business Southtown Custom Homes has several similar builds throughout Southtown and downtown San Antonio.

“His signature has been that he will take the original property and rip it down to the studs,” real-estate agent Patrick Vallejo said, who describes the one-of-a-kind dwelling as a “unicorn” in his sales listing.

Indeed, little was sacred at the property, constructed in 1966, which was gutted within an inch of its life. But for all that was lost, so much more was gained, according to Vallejo.

What started as a mere 900-square-foot house gained an additional 1100-square-feet. But rather than making the house a Frankenstein monster with the new addition, Flores had a solution.

“He made more of a parapet wall up front to make the roofline look more appealing,” Vallejo said, adding that the approach served to unify the structure.

Flores and his crew also updated the electric, insulation, windows, pier and beam foundation, plumbing and more on the three-bedroom, two-bath residence.

“There’s not a lot to this property that didn’t get touched,” Vallejo said.

The key, as always, was location, location, location.

“Lonestar is one of few neighborhoods downtown where you can do such a drastic transformation because it’s not historic,” Vallejo explained.

Vallejo, who also has properties in King William, said sometimes it can be a hassle to make an update because of all the hoops to jump through for approval.

“You still need wood framed windows and it’s not very energy efficient,” he said, offering an example of historic home restrictions.

Here in this “hidden gem” neighborhood within walking distance of chic restaurant Leche de Tigre, builders including Flores have more room to experiment. And the result, in this case, is a quirky, one-of-a-kind home.
